2 Quick Review… Paradox - A seemingly contradictory statement that on closer scrutiny reveals a deeper truth. Irony -- A literary technique used to create meaning that seems to contradict the literal meaning or events. Sarcasm -- a bitter form of irony, intended to taunt or hurt Theme - The central or universal idea of a piece of fiction or the main idea of a non-fiction essay There are two types of Theme: Explicit = Told Implicit= Hinted

3 Monologue A long speech made by one performer or by one person in a group.

4 Soliloquy A character talks to himself or herself or reveals his or her thoughts without addressing a listener.

5 Aside “Breaking the Fourth Wall”
A comment or speech made by an actor to the audience, as though momentarily stepping outside of the action on stage.

6 Tone The attitude of the writer or speaker

7 Mood A feeling the reader gets when reading
