1 Practice-related feedback
Add name, title and date information if required Module lasts 25 minutes

2 The requirement

3 Purpose of this requirement
It encourages nurses, midwives and nursing associates to be more responsive to the needs of patients and service users, and those who care for them, by seeking feedback from those they work with and care for. This feedback can be used to make improvements to nurses, midwives and nursing associates’ practice. Notes for facilitators Explain that nurses, midwives and nursing associates do not need to go out and specifically set up procedures to gather feedback. They will be receiving this throughout the natural course of their duties. It is about recognising when they receive it. Activity – 1 minute Before showing next slide engage the audience by asking them to give examples where they think feedback can come from – maybe use a show of hands exercise to gather as many different examples before showing next slide.

4 How to meet the requirement
Try to obtain feedback from a variety of sources. This may include: feedback from patients, service users, carers or students as part of your day to day work feedback from colleagues such as nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare professionals feedback from colleagues in management, on reception, in assistant positions, as well as from fellow teachers, researchers, academics or policy colleagues complaints team performance reports serious event reviews feedback received through your annual appraisal. Notes for facilitators Feedback can come either orally or in writing and can relate to personal or team practice. It is recommended that a note is kept of any feedback. This will be helpful when preparing reflective accounts. Nurses, midwives and nursing associates may collect more that the required five pieces but only need to note the details of five. Never identify any individual, whether alive or deceased within records.

5 Types of feedback Notes for facilitators
Emphasise that feedback can come in a variety of forms and is not just ‘formal’ feedback. Highlight that nurses, midwives and nursing associates and their organisations are likely to already receive a range of feedback.

6 How to record your feedback
Notes for facilitators Highlight the need to always seek permission when using information from an employer.

7 Activity Activity: Group work - 15 minutes.
Working in pairs each participant will share a positive and constructive experience of feedback (briefly) with their partner that has occurred over the last year. They must reflect on what learning they achieved and how they changed their practice. Each nurse, midwife or nursing associate should quickly note this for their personal use. Ensure that nurses, midwives and nursing associates are aware that they don’t need to write long, detailed notes on the feedback they receive. The feedback they receive will feed in to the five written reflective accounts they will prepare, and that are covered in a separate module. Action for facilitator: Put up next slide while discussions are taking place to act as an aide memoire.
