Warm-Up: Why is the Gettysburg Address considered the most important speech in American history? MLQ: How can we learn about African Americans and their experience during the Civil War by reading for information? Vocabulary Heroic: Act of being courageous or brave Liberated: To set free The fireman was heroic when he saved the child from the fire. The convict felt liberated when he was released from jail. 2 Emancipation Proclamation
The proclamation had little effect at first because it freed the slaves only in states that had seceded from the Union. Prompted many slaves to escape when Union troops came near. It did not free slaves in border states.

3 African American Participation in the War
As war causalities climbed, the Union needed even more troops. Many Free African Americans were willing to volunteer to fight, as Slaves escaped to the North they were allowed to join the Union army. Confederate troops treated African American troops harshly either killing them brutally or selling them back into captivity. One unit in particular proved themselves to be excellent soldiers. This unit is known as the 54th Infantry. They lead a heroic charge on S.Carolina’s Fort Wagner .
