Learning Objective: TSW be to analyze African Americans and battles they fought in the Civil War with 85% accuracy. Content Standard: 4.8 Recognizes the effects and limitations of the Emancipation Proclamation. 5.11 Analyze the role of African Americans during the Civil War and Reconstruction a) Identifies the role of black soldiers, spies, and slaves to the war effort in the North and South b) Analyze the successes and failures of Reconstruction on the life of freedmen. Accomplishment: The students analyzed and answered questions about African Americans in the Civil War.

3 Civil War The Union and the Confederate brought African American troops to the battlefield. Before the Civil War broke out in 1861, there were an estimated almost four million slaves in the United States.Civil War The United States had under 500,000 free African Americans.

9 Battles Two years into the Civil War, black soldiers prepared for battle. Their first major battle was fought at Port Hudson, Louisiana on May 27, 1863. African Americans proved their courage beyond a doubt. African Americans

10 Continued… In one of the bloodiest battles of the war, African American troops from the 9 th Louisiana Infantry, the 1 st Mississippi Infantry, and the 13 th Louisiana Infantry fought along white troops. They fought on June 7, 1863 in Milliken’s Bend Louisiana.

11 Continued… African Americans served in 163 units for the Union army as well as surely thousands more in the navy.

13 In Conclusion African Americans proved their courage beyond a doubt by fighting in the Civil War. Even, though they went through a lot of battles, they did not give up. Not only did they serve in the Civil War, but they served in the army and navy as well.
