2 Today’s Goal: Learn about legends and tall tales as you analyze American Legends.
Outcomes: Analyze classic pieces of literature that uniquely represents American folk lore: John Henry, Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and The Brave Engineer. Engage your multiple intelligences by analyzing Americana literature in a DVD format that offers appealing visuals, interwoven with creative, compelling musical lyrics. Appreciate diversity through the narrative of James Earl Jones and the lead story of John Henry.

3 Starter: While all folk lore has some common elements, each sub-genre (category) has distinctive features. What makes legends (and tall tales) distinct from the other sub-genres of folk lore? They are exaggerated stories about historical events or characters. Are the characters people who really lived, or are they fictitious figures? They could be either: The characters may or may not have actually existed.   Take out a sheet of notebook paper and fill out a heading. Assignment is “Analyzing Legends (Tall Tales)” As you view these stories, look for common elements: Analyze these stories to determine the characteristics of all American folk tales or tall tales.
