Treaty Date Indian Group Results for United States Results for Indian Groups Outcome Pike’s Treaty 1805 Dakota Gained two pieces of land – at the mouth of the St. Croix and around the Mississippi – small pieces of land for a fort Got paid $2,000 in cash or goods. They set the terms for this agreement Fort Snelling was eventually built on this land. Protected American interests in the region. Became a gathering place for American merchants and settlers. Treaty of 1837 1837 Dakota and Ojibwe Received large sums of land – western Wisconsin and Minnesota east of the Mississippi Were not paid. Before they were paid, American settlers rushed into their lands Mills were built and settlements grew at places like Marine on St. Croix, Taylors Falls, and Stillwater. St. Paul (Pig’s Eye) also began to form. Traverse de Sioux 1851 Dakota – Sisseton and Wahpeton Received Dakota lands in Minnesota Got money/goods. Supplies, etc. Dakota leaders were tricked into signing a document that stated that they had to give all the money they earned from the treaty back to the traders. Treaty at Mendota Dakota – Mdewankanton and Wahpekute Got all the remaining Dakota lands in Minnesota and Iowa – 35 million acres Promise of $3 million and permanent reservation on the Minnesota River US settlers pushed Native Americans out of their lands. Permanent Reservation was turned into temporary reservations by the US government. Money went to traders and missionaries who accused the Dakota of ruining the land.
