Presentation on theme: "Mitosis Making new cells for growth"— Presentation transcript:

1 Mitosis Making new cells for growth

2 The Cell Cycle Cycle of events that a cell goes through throughout its life A cell will go through many cycles throughout its life One cycle begins with a new “daughter” cell and ends with it going through mitosis (dividing).

3 Interphase Period of cell growth and metabolism DNA is relaxed
G1 – growth and metabolism S – DNA replication occurs G2 – growth and preparation for division DNA is relaxed Nuclear membrane visible Nucleolus is visible

4 Prophase Chromosomes condense and are visible
Nuclear envelope & nucleolus disappear Microtubules attach to chromosomes Chromosomes start to move to the center of the cell Centrosomes move to opposite poles

5 Metaphase Chromosomes are lined up at the metaphase plate
Mitotic spindle completely formed Centrosomes at opposite poles Microtubules attached to chromatids

6 Anaphase Daughter chromosomes moves to opposite poles of cell
Sister Chromatids are separated Daughter chromosomes moves to opposite poles of cell Cell elongates

7 Telophase & Cytokinesis
Reverse of prophase: Nuclear membrane & nucleolus reappear Chromosomes relax Mitotic spindle disappears Cytokinesis divides the cell into two genetically identical daughter cells Builds a “wall” in plants & “pinches” in animals Cytokinesis begins in telophase but ends just after mitosis is complete

8 Prophase Metaphase Telophase Cytokinesis Interphase Telophase Anaphase
