Hockey Sticks Science (Chemistry) & Information Fluency Inquiry Project By: Brooklynn, Reitan & Segan.
2
ALL ABOUT HOCKEY STICKS
Throughout this presentation we will be informing you about 3 main ideas... - The production of aluminum - All the effects that process has on the environment - And last of all, how to recycle your aluminum hockey sticks / everyday aluminum product. Let's get started!!!
3
What are hockey sticks typically made of?
Hockey sticks can be made of lots of different types of materials including.... - Fibre glass - Wood - And aluminum Today we'll be exploring aluminum hockey sticks in particular.
4
Where does aluminum come from?
- BC has 10 aluminum plants - BC produces 6% of the worlds aluminum supply. - As for how aluminum is actually made lime, soda ash, water and last but not least is bauxite are the key components. - A majority of the earths aluminum factors are ound in the earths crust.
5
How is it made into hockey sticks?
Heres a video that explains how aluminum is made into hockey sticks.
6
How do aluminum plants effect the environment?
Aluminum factories release sodium fluoride and sulfur dioxide. THAT has a negative effect on the environment Another negative out come is the burning of greenhouse gasses while they work the factories.
7
What else can aluminum be used for?
Aluminum can be used for loads of other things. Here are a few exaples... Window frames Kitchen supplies Cans/Food packaging HOCKEY STICKS Other sportig goods Etc, etc....
8
What are some physical & chemical properties in aluminum?
When in the form of a powder, aluminum is highly flammable. Highly reactive to acids. PHYSICAL Aluminum has a silvery- white-ish color. It is meltable and boils at high temperatures (Approx F) Aluminum is one of the most ductile metales.
9
How does aluminum decompose?
10
How is the decomposition of aluminum harmful to the environment?
Aluminum material fills landfills. Not recycling aluminum product ultimately results in toxic waste and pollution in all four spheres!
11
What is the proper way to dispose aluminum?
Small things like pop cans, and aluminum foil can be recycled at a local depot. That being said aluminum foil can be reused. Try to squeeze the most use out of your aluminum accessories as possible!
12
Get creative... Re-use them! Be creative, find ways to mangle them up into things with purpose. EX: Stick handling course, shelves, art, sell them, donate them, coffee tables, etc.
