1 Organelles Biology dept.

2 Cytoplasm A clear fluid that surrounds the organelles inside the cell.

3 Nucleus Manages cell function.
Contains DNA which is the instructions for building proteins. Surrounded by the Nuclear envelope.

4 Nuclear envelope Double membrane.
Has large pores so materials can pass back and forth between the nucleus and the rest of the cell.

5 Nucleolus Sub-organelle of the nucleus. Produces ribosomes.

6 Ribosome Are the site of protein construction.
Found on the outside of the rough endoplasmic reticulum or floating free in the cytoplasm.

7 Endoplasmic reticulum
Rough E.R. is covered by ribosomes Is a network of interconnected compartments inside the cell.

8 Endoplasmic reticulum
Smooth E.R. contains no ribosomes. Contains enzymes to synthesize lipids (fats). Functions as cell’s delivery system, bringing materials to the ribosomes so proteins can be assembled. Detoxification.

9 Storage Golgi apparatus stores, packages, and modifies proteins.

10 Storage Vacuole store food, enzymes, and other materials needed by the cell

11 Storage Lysosomes stores digestive enzymes.

12 Storage Plastids are plant organelles that store starches, lipids, and pigments like chlorophyll.

13 Energy Mitochondria breakdown food molecules to release energy.

14 Energy Chloroplasts. Only found in plants. Contain chlorophyll.
Transforms light energy into usable chemical energy (food).

15 Support Cytoskeleton- Network of thin, fibrous elements that provide support for organelles. Maintains cell shape. Microtubules (thin, hollow) and microfilaments (thin, solid).

16 Movement Cilia are short numerous hair-like projections that move in a wave like manner.

17 Movement Flagella are longer projections that are whip like.
