2 The steps Suspicion Prevention of spread Confirmation Fact gathering
11/04/2019 The steps Suspicion Prevention of spread Confirmation Fact gathering Information of scientists Decision - Action Removal of restrictions

3 Suspicion Positive finding in routine health monitoring
Report from breeder that you have received animals from a unit which has subsequently been found positive Direct observation of signs (sick animals, ectoparasites, endoparasites etc.)

4 Prevention of spread No movement of animals except to ”blind alley”
11/04/2019 Prevention of spread No movement of animals except to ”blind alley” Tissue, serum, blood from animals handled as if infected Minimise traffic Quarantine for persons Sterilisation of items Hypo-pressure

5 11/04/2019 Confirmation Show presence of infectious agent by relevant method in relevant animals Culture - Serology – PCR – direct observation Sentinels – research animals

6 11/04/2019 Fact gathering Impact on animal welfare Impact on research Zoonosis Options: Destroy/empty? Treat? Burnout? Rederive? Do nothing – accept presence? Sanitation of associated laboratories, fate of samples -> suggestion for plan

7 Information to scientists
11/04/2019 Information to scientists Presentation of facts Discussion Decision Limit population size / Cease breeding Provide treatment in drinking water Check for effect of treatment Isolate population

8 Decision - Action Plan including time frame Week 30-39
11/04/2019 Decision - Action Plan including time frame Week 30-39 Scientists finish their activities as far as possible 39 Stop matings intended to produce live offspring. Still OK for matings for embryo production. Stop import of animals for experiments which would include the start of the treatment period (that means 15 November) 40 41 42 43 All animals are moved to IVC cages in a single or two rooms. 44 Animals are killed at the latest on 12 November unless there is an agreement that the animals can continue 45 46 Monday 15 November: Antibiotic treatment starts and continues for the next 2 weeks. Both mice and rats are treated. November: Cleaning of empty rooms (if possible before, even better). 47 Wednesday 24 November: All animals are moved to clean cages and clean rooms. Friday 26 November last day of treatment. 48 29 November. Normal activity resumed. Stop for autoclaving out.

9 Removal of restrictions
11/04/2019 Removal of restrictions Check?

11/04/2019 Workshop Each groups gets one case Discussion for groups: Prevention of spread – necessary?, possible? Confirmation – which test? which animals? Fact gathering - Impact on animal welfare? Impact on research? Zoonosis? What are the options (Destroy/empty? Treat? Burnout? Rederive? Do nothing – accept presence?) Consider: Sanitation of associated laboratories, fate of samples taken from the animals
