1 Decide, with an example, whether these statements are true or false.
Length and perimeter GM1.1 Core Starter Decide, with an example, whether these statements are true or false. To convert a measurement from centimetres to millimetres, just add a zero to the end of the number. Squares are the only shapes that have four equal sides. All squares are rectangles. Only rectangles have opposite sides the same length. The square is the only four-sided shape with four equal sides and four equal angles. Three-digit numbers are always larger than two-digit numbers. Preamble An activity which probes pupils’ understanding of place value and properties of simple shapes through a collection of true or false statements. One approach would be to conduct a quick straw poll and then ask pupils to justify their decisions. Possible content Properties of squares and rectangles, multiplication by 10, place value. Resources None. Solutions/Notes True/False Possible justification False cm = 12 mm (not 1.20 mm). The statement is true for whole cm. False A rhombus has four equal sides (squares also need four right angles). True A square is a special sort of rectangle (all sides are the same length). False Parallelograms also have opposite sides the same length. True False is greater than 10.5 or 1.2 is greater than 1.15 etc.
