3 Digital Learning Competencies (DLCs) for Teachers
Informed by International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), and the NC Professional Teaching Standards arningnc/competencies/teacher- dlcompetencies.pdf The Digital Learning Competencies (DLCs) are skills that teachers and leaders should integrate into their practice in order to create an effective digital learning environment. The content of the competencies was informed by national models such as the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) teaching standards, International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), and the North Carolina Logic Model. In 2013, the North Carolina Legislature passed House Bill 23. This bill called on the State Board of Education to develop digital teaching and learning competencies that would “provide a framework for schools of education, school administrators, and classroom teachers on the needed skills to provide high-quality, integrated digital teaching and learning.” The passage of this law reflects the changing nature of schools in North Carolina and nationwide. Technology is no longer an extraneous part of how some students learn but a necessity for all students as they move from K-12 schools to college and career. As the technology available to students and in North Carolina schools changes, the way educators approach teaching and learning must also adapt. These competencies provide teachers and administrators with a framework for making those changes. The Digital Learning Competencies for NC Teachers and Administrators were approved by the NC State Board of Education on 06/02/2016 and became effective 07/01/2017.

4 Required for Licensure Renewal
Approved by SBE 6/1/2017. All licenses expiring 6/30/2019 and beyond. (See SBE Policy LICN-005) Requires 2 DLC CEUs for teachers. LEA determines whether or not a professional development activity qualifies for DLC credit. On June 1, 2017, the Digital Learning Competencies for Teachers and for Administrators were approved by the State Board of Education (SBE) as part of licensure renewal requirements per G.S.115C-296(b)(1)c. This policy for Licensure Renewal (LICN-005) includes the requirement of two Digital Learning Competency CEUs and will go into effect for teachers and for administrators with licenses expiring on or after June 30, 2019.

5 Renewal CEU Requirement
Teachers in grades 6-12 with licenses expiring June 30, 2019 and beyond must have: 3 Subject Area 2 Digital Learning Competencies 3 General These 2 CEUs will be part of the 8 total required for renewal of a Continuing Professional License. 3 general, 3 in subject area, and 2 in DTL.

6 What are the DLCs? Four focus areas for teachers:
Leadership in Digital Learning Digital Citizenship Digital Content and Instruction Data and Assessment The competencies are organized into focus areas: Four for teachers: Leadership in Digital Learning, Digital Citizenship, Digital Content and Instruction, and Data and Assessment. Each Focus Area has been aligned to the Professional Teaching with a subset of competencies that help to explain and ‘unpack’ the Focus Area.

Vision Instruction Culture Personalized Digital Learning Friday Institute Professional Development Models - TPACK, SAMR, Triple E Digital Teams for Digital Learning Educator on Loan Expectation for Change Lots of foundation had to be laid to get to where we are today. New superintendent, post RTTT, new ideas, Michael Fullan, Allen November, DIstributive Leadership Model, no more silos working in isolation. PD, risk taking, trust among colleagues, failing forward, Tech Camps, finding those teachers already doing this.

10 PLCs, Core Instruction / Digital Integration, Behavior, and Data (Five person teams from each school identified to get the PD and bring back - CTE Teachers key) Not to mention MTSS and NCStar School Improvement processes are also in place in our schools.

11 The Innovator’s Mindset is the belief that abilities, intelligence, and talents are developed so that they lead to the creation of new and better ideas. George Couros, author George Couros, Author of the Innovator’s Mindset kicked things off during summer PD with our Principals.

12 Dissecting your LEA Review the components of the Digital Age Learning Model Grab a partner and discuss each component of the model, rating your LEA’s progress in each area (5 = our LEA could create a how-to video about this component; 1 = our LEA needs to watch many how-to videos about this component) Go to to record your LEA’s rating. Enter the code: First pull up the Digital Age Learning Model from the NC Digital Learning Plan Need to pull up mentimeter on another tab to show results

13 Make sure to pull up mentimeter while students are working
