1 Methods of Science, Lesson 1,2,3
August 13, 2018 Methods of Science, Lesson 1,2,3

2 August 13, INB Pages 8 and 9 BW: Methods of Science, Lesson 1, p NOS 4-5. (Do Not Write These Questions) Read and answer these 3 questions: What are the 3 branches of science? Which one interests you most? Explain why you like that one best. CW: Use what you learned about your textbook to find the definitions of these five words and write them on INB page 9: Observation, Inference, Hypothesis, Prediction, and Technology HW: Write these questions and answer them in your homework section on page 8. What is critical thinking? NOS 10 What is the difference between scientific law and theory? NOS8-9 Page NOS 11, #8 (just answer, do not write the question)

3 August 14, INB Pages 10 and 11 BW: Copy the list of steps down the page in your Bell work space. 1. Define the Problem. 2. Do Your Research. 3. Develop a possible Solution. 4. Design your solution. 5. Build a prototype. 6. Test it. 7. Evaluate your success. CW: Watch the video “Crash Course Kids: Defining Problems”. Copy the Engineering Design Process diagram on Page NOS 14. What are constraints? 2. What is a prototype and why would testing mean that you have to change it? Watch the video on Structural Engineers HW: 1. Have you ever tried to engineer something? How did it go? 2. What engineering job would you like to find out more about?

4 Wed August 15, INB pages 12-13 BW: Read Page NOS 18. Answer these questions. How would you describe the lava flow to someone who could not see it? What kind of measurements could be taken of the lava flow? If Scientist A measures in inches per hour and B measures in centimeters per hour what will happen when they try to compare their data. What should they do? CW: Glue in the Key Concept Builder page and find the correct answers in Lesson 2, NOS p HW: Glue in the half sheet and circle the BEST answer to measure each quantity.

5 August 16, 2018 INB pages 14-15 TEST FRIDAY!
BW: Read NOS page 26. Write a 2-3 sentence summary. CW: Watch the video about the Iceman. How was the Iceman dressed and what did he have with him? Page NOS 26 How did they estimate how long the Iceman had been there? Page NOS 28 What preserved the Iceman’s body for so long? Page NOS 28 How did the professor figure out what time of year the Iceman died? NOS 32 HW: Why do you think it would be important to carefully document the positions of ancient artifacts and to disturb them as little as possible as they are being excavated?
