1 Department of Geology and Geological Engineering
Heiland/ Van Tuyl Joint Lecture- Spring 2015 4:00-5:00 p.m. at Green Center Metals Hall    Thursday, February 26, 2015 Dr. Meghan Miller UNAVCO, President “Geodesy Innovation for Science and Impact” Abstract: Geodesy is the science of determining the shape, size, gravity field, and rotation of the Earth, and how these change with time. The modern geodetic toolbox provides unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution, leading to a renaissance across the geosciences by application of these tools. NSF and NASA support geodesy through the national geodetic UNAVCO facilities in Boulder. This presentation will feature recent innovative applications of geodesy to geophysical and broader geoscience topics from investigators in the UNAVCO science community: deformation of the Earth’s surface during the earthquake cycles; redistribution of mass within the solid Earth and cryosphere; oceanic and atmospheric circulation; changes in sea level and their spatial variation; variations in the flow and mass balance of glaciers as melting accelerates and isostacy responds; detection of lake seiches and their forcing; and environmental sensing. These same technologies are valuable across the much broader spectrum of civil Earth observations, a topic of national importance. These applications will also be highlighted.
