3 What is FIRST AID? First Aid is practical skills for saving lives and managing injury. As a First Aid provider, your role is to provide basic care in an emergency until more advanced care can be provided. YOUR RESPONSE MAY SAVE A LIFE!

4 REASONS WHY FIRST AID IS IMPORTANT!
Save lives Protect people from further harm Prevent injuries from worsening Promote recovery Provide comfort to the ill or injured Learn how to make places safe Protect the unconscious – they cant help themselves!!

5 RECOGNISING EMERGENCIES
Recognising an emergency is the first step in responding! Medical Emergency – a sudden illness that requires immediate medical attention. eg. heart attack. Injury – Damage to the body which results from a violent force eg. broken arm. ( some injuries can be serious enough to be considered emergencies)

6 Where can an emergency occur?
The victim of an emergency can be anyone – a friend, a family member, a stranger, or even YOU! ROAD HOME SCHOOL PARK ANYWHERE!!!!

7 RECOGNISING EMERGENCIES
UNUSUAL NOISES Screams, yells, moans, calls for help, breaking glass, crashing metal, screeching tyres UNUSUAL SIGHTS Things that may look unusual Broken glass, spilled medicine, fallen cables UNUSUAL SMELLS Smells that are stronger than usual UNUSUAL SYMPTOMS OR BEHAVIOUR Unconsciousness, Difficulty breathing, change in skin colour, slurred speech, clutching at chest or throat.

8 RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES
TAKE APPROPRIATE SAFETY MEASURES Ensure the safety of yourself, the victim and bystanders CALL FOR HELP Emergency contact number 000 COMMUNICATE Reassure the victim, gather information on the victim, provide information to emergency personnel MANAGE BYSTANDERS Organise bystander to do the following – Call the emergency number, meet and direct the ambulance, comfort the victim, help obtain supplies, keep area safe, protect the victim from further dangers.

9 PREPARING FOR EMERGENCIES
You can be ready for emergencies if you do the following things… Keep info about you and your family in a handy place.(eg. fridge ) Keep medical records up to date Make sure your house number is able to be identified easily Keep a first aid kit nearby
