1 Yellow Journalism: It’s all about selling newspapers…….

2 1890’s Almost all Americans got their news from Newspapers in the 1890’s. Selling newspapers was a big bussiness.

3 Joseph Pulitzer He owned the New York World newspaper.

4 William Randolph Hearst
He owned the New York Journal newspaper.

5 So What? Well, most Americans would read one newspaper a day.
New York is America’s biggest city. Hearst and Pulitzer were competing to get their newspapers in as many hands as possible.

6 Oh. But why do they call it “Yellow Journalism,” Mr. Moran????
Because of a comic strip known as “Hogan’s Ally.” Pulitzer had a cartoon artist who made the comic strip. The main character was named the “Yellow Kid.”

8 Hearst steals the Yellow Kid!
Hearst, because he wants to compete with Pulitzer, hires the comic strip guy away from Pulitzer and has him write for him!

9 Pulitzer Pulitzer says, fine, whatever, I’ll just hire another cartoonist and make him make another “Yellow Kid.”

10 Hence, Yellow Journalism.
The newspapers were competing against each other. Each was using their own “Yellow Kid” to attract customers.

11 Traits of Yellow Journalism
Take a story and make it sensational! That means, jazz it up, make it more exciting, exaggerate….etc.
