2. Burns Be aware of hot surfaces Range top, oven, pots and pans
Steam Burns – lift/open lids with opening away from your face
Treatment:
Run under cool water
Cover with clean cloth or bandage
Keep covered when working with food

3. Fires Can happen on the range (stove top) or in the oven. Oven Fires:
Keep door closed
Turn off heat
Range Fires:
Smother with lid, baking soda or other non-flammable cover

4. P-A-S-S Proper way to use a fire extinguisher uses the pass method
P-Pull the pin
A-Aim the nozzle
S-Squeeze the handle
S-Sweep across the base of the fire

5. Electric Shock Keep appliances plugged in AWAY from water sources
Do not unplug cords with wet hands
Do not use appliances with frayed cords or exposed wires
Do not overload outlets

6. Cuts Always cut AWAY from yourself
Use claw formation to protect fingertips
More than can knives cut:
Peeler, grater, apple slicer, etc

7. Slips/Falls Keep walkways clear Wipe up spills immediately
Water, flour & cooking spray are most hazardous items

8. Bumps & Bruises Close doors and drawers Keep clear of clutter
Watch out for others

9. Proper Dress Remove bulky clothing/long sleeves Tie long hair back
Shoes
Apron & secure the strings

10. Oven Safety USE OVEN MITS! Stand to the side Open door ALL the way
Don’t reach into a hot oven – pull the rack out
Close door completely unless broiling

11. Knife Safety Keep knives sharp Dull knives are more likely to cut you
Store properly
In a block NOT a drawer
Carry safely
Point down – blade back
Wash and dry immediately after use
Do NOT soak in the dishwater

12. Range Safety (Stove Top)
Use the burner closest to you first.
Choose a burner to match the size of your pan.
Turn pan handles in
Do not allow them to hang over the edge of the counter
Use heat safe tools to stir
Open lid away from your face to avoid steam burns
