PORTRAITS

What is a portrait? In your own words tell me what a portrait is…..

A portrait is an artistic representation of a person
A portrait is an artistic representation of a person. It can be done in different types of media such as pictures, drawings, paintings, sculptures, or something visual that gives the image of a person. Usually portraits entail an image of a person’s face, head, and shoulders.

Why take a portrait? List 3 reasons that come to mind of why people take portraits?

Before photographs were created, people would draw or paint images of people. Paintings were time consuming and expensive. Ancient paintings were done to communicate and to keep records to remember and document things/people.

Types of portraits Formal: A posed photo of a person or persons that emphasizes the person and nothing else. Can be indoors or outdoors but the subject is the main focus. Candid: captures people going about their everyday routine and life activities Environmental: includes the subject’s surroundings to help tell us about that person such as hobbies or interests Self: you become your own subject and have the chance to tell your own story

Vocabulary to know Diffused Light: spread out over a large area; not concentrated Direct Lighting: Light coming from only 1 source and doesn’t have light on any other side of the subject Indirect Lighting: Light coming from all sides; light is being bounced around and hitting subject from all angles. Reflected Light: Light that is reflected into the shadows to lighten the subject for a nice three-dimensional portrait; using a reflector
