2 Federal courts Federal courts handle 8 types of cases.

3 Cases that raise constitutional issues
Type 1 = Constitution Cases that raise constitutional issues **anything dealing with the constitution (mostly bill of rights) Example- Issue of violation of first amendment Search and seized w/o permission or warrant

4 Type 2 = Federal Law Cases dealing with the breaking of federal laws -Example– Cases involving murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking, treason, etc… Treason– only crime defined in Constitution!!!!!!! Go against country; helping plan attack, harboring terrorists, helping spies or being a spy

5 Type 3 = Maritime Laws Cases involving American ships at sea Art. 1 sec 8 discusses naval matters as a part of federal law -Example -- ship wrecks, drugs on board, etc… The picture shows 240 million dollars worth of….

6 Type 4 = Disputes involving the U.S. Government
-Example—cases where federal government (US gov’t) is involved If you sue gov’t… it would be heard here Slip and fall in a post office? Injured in a traffic accident involving an FBI agent? Medical malpractice by a Veterans Administration doctor?

7 Type 5 =Controversies between states
Example: 2 states suing each other over the use of a river Columbia SC - we see that South Carolina could file a lawsuit against North Carolina "as early as this week" if the N.C. Environmental Management Commission approves a two-city plan to remove 36 million gallons of water a day from the Catawba River.

9 Type 6 = Disputes between citizens of different states
-Example Disagreements b/w people from different states when more than $75,000 is in dispute One pound of hundred dollar bills is worth $45,400 dollars.

10 Type 7 = Disputes involving Different governments
-Example Diff levels of gov’t suing eachother County vs state Such as Iredell suing the state of NC for not providing enough funds for SIHS.

11 Type 8 = Cases involving U.S. Officials in Foreign Nations
-Example Where ambassadors and other foreign representatives are involved
