Pneumothorax Vitals: S.O.B. and Increase W.O.B.
Tachycardia Tachypnea S.O.B. and Increase W.O.B. Sudden sharp pain on the affected side Distant or diminished breath sounds on affected side. Sudden drop in SpO2, PaO2 Cyanosis Tracheal shift Sudden increase in ventilation pressures – possible high pressure limit

Pneumothorax Diagnosis and treatment Increase FIO2 to 100%
Call for STAT Portable CXR Reduce or turn off PEEP Notify Physician immediately Prepare for chest tube insertion

Tachycardia followed by bradycardia Trachea shifted away (mediastinal shift) Acute distress Hyperresonant percussion note on affected side. Needs immediate intervention

Insert needle in 3 intercostal space, midclavicular line
