1 IFRC’s approach to gender and diversity
How gender and diversity is reflected within Strategy 2020

2 IFRC’s approach The IFRC’s gender and diversity work is rooted in its humanitarian mandate to prevent and alleviate human suffering without discrimination and to protect human dignity. The RCRC recognizes that women and men have different capacities, strengths, needs and vulnerabilities The IFRC’s gender and diversity work is rooted in its humanitarian mandate to prevent and alleviate human suffering without discrimination and to protect human dignity. The Red Cross Red Crescent recognizes that women and men have different capacities, strengths, needs and vulnerabilities, which can impact resilience to disasters and crises.

3 IFRC’s approach Individuals & communities can be at greater risk due to their gender or physical and social differences e.g. Age, disability, ethnic or religious minorities, migrant status Inequality and discrimination based on these differences can impact resilience to disasters and crises.

4 IFRC Strategic Framework on Gender and Diversity issues
1 Systematic incorporation of gender and diversity in all programs, services and tools (planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting). 2 Improved gender and diversity composition at all levels (governance, management, staff and volunteers). 3 Reduced gender- and diversity-based inequality, discrimination and violence through the active promotion of fundamental principles and humanitarian values. The IFRC Strategic Framework on Gender and Diversity issues ( ). This provides strategic direction to the IFRC and its member National Societies by encouraging and promoting gender equality and respect for diversity. There are three key outcomes outlined in this strategy: Outcome 1: Systematic incorporation of gender and diversity in all programmes, services and tools throughout the whole project management cycle - from assessment to planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting. Outcome 2: Improved gender and diversity composition at all levels e.g. governance, management, staff and volunteers. Outcome 3: Reduced gender- and diversity-based inequality, discrimination and violence through the active promotion of fundamental principles and humanitarian values.

5 Fundamental Principles
Fundamental principle of impartiality: The RCRC Movement makes no discrimination as to: Nationality Race Religious beliefs Class Political opinions The Strategy is in line with Strategy 2020 and the IFRC’s principles and values. The principle of impartiality - endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress ensures that all people will be helped equally in a humanitarian situation as well as recognizing that we cannot address everyone needs in exactly the same way without accounting how much they are suffering or how urgent their needs are – both these level of suffering and urgency or need can be impacted by their vulnerability. …Whilst giving priority to the most urgent cases of distress

6 Strategy 2020 – Three strategic aims
Issues of gender- and diversity based discrimination are identified Actions to reduce gender- and diversity-based violence are included in all programs, services and tools Save lives, protect livelihoods and strengthen recovery from disasters and crises Access to primary healthcare services is improved for vulnerable women, girls, men and boys Build the resilience of women, girls, men and boys and diverse groups Enable healthy and safe living Opportunities are created within communities for learning and promote gender equality and respect for diversity Opportunities are created to promote the equal sharing of power and participation in decision making processes Promote social inclusion and a culture of nonviolence and peace

7 Strategy 2020 – Three enabling actions
Gender and diversity focal points identified in National Societies who are part of regional networks Gender balance among volunteers and equal access to opportunities Build strong National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Decision-makers and opinion leaders are persuaded to act in the interests of vulnerable groups Identify public policies and practices that exclude based on gender or diversity. Pursue humanitarian diplomacy to prevent and reduce vulnerability Resource mobilization: Funds are allocated to support gender- and diversity throughout program cycles Ensure key elements of the framework to be incorporated into future IFRC frameworks Function effectively as the IFRC

8 Gender and Diversity for Community Resilience
When we apply these frameworks to the work of National Societies, safer and more resilient communities can be achieved This means understanding the needs and capacities in a community and addressing and harnessing these Ensuring that no one gets left behind Therefore it is important to view gender and diversity as integral to the pillars of DM and Health When we apply these frameworks to the work we do in National Societies it means that we can create safer and more resilient communities..
