1 Human Geography

2 Do Now Why are maps always distorted versions of a globe? (complete sentences) How can maps help solve problems? Draw the best cat you can.

3 Agenda Do Now (5 mins) Map Scale (10 Mins) Spatial Scale (15 mins)
Analysis of Scale (10 mins) Exit ticket (5 mins)

4 Scale There are TWO main categories of scale that geographers work with: Map Scale Spatial Scale

5 Map Scale The level of detail that you can show in a map depends on its map scale. Map Scale refers to the relationship of size on a map compared to its actual size on Earth.

6 Three Ways of Presenting Map Scale
Ratio or Fraction This way shows the numerical ratio between distances on a map, and Earth’s surface. EXAMPLE: A scale of 1:24,000 means that 1 unit on the map represents 24,000 of the same unit on Earth. So: 1:24,000 in inches means 1 inch on map is 24,000 inches on Earth.

7 Three Ways of Presenting Map Scale
2. Written / Verbal Scale Describes relationships between distances on the map with distances on Earth in words. EXAMPLE: “1 inch = 1 mile” on a map.

8 Three Ways of Presenting Map Scale
3. Graphic Scale A Graphic Scale is usually a bar line marked to show distance on Earth’s surface. EX:

9 Difference between Large and Small Scale

10 Large Scale or Small Scale?
A map of Downtown L.A. A map of the U.S.A.

11 Difference between Large and Small Scale
The difference is always relative.

12 Spatial Scale Local Regional Global
Spatial Scale is used when studying space and place. There are three main scales that human geographers use: Local Regional Global

13 Spatial Scale Local: Having to do with a specific place, such as: a vacation spot, a town, a district in a city, a neighborhood or a community. *It cannot be a state or country. That is too big. Examples: Downtown Los Angeles Inglewood What are your examples?

14 Spatial Scale 2.Regional Scale or Region
A region is a group of places that share similar characteristics, but not necessarily shared boundaries. Studying from a regional scale mean looking at what connects different places to one another. EX: -Southern California is a region. -Central America is a region. What are your examples?

15 Spatial Scale 3. Global Scale:
Global Scale is used when looking at activities and patterns that encompass the entire earth. Examples: International trading Commercial agriculture Popular Culture (memes, movies, music, sports) What are your examples?
