1 Rough And Finalized Sketch
October 29, 2018

2 Sketching And Blood Vocabulary lab activity
As a team, make a list of the items that should be seen on a rough sketch and on a final sketch. Just a reminder:

3 The Rough Sketch Defined as a sketch drawn at the crime scene that contains an accurate description of the dimensions of the scene and all the objects having a bearing on the case. The rough sketch is the first pencil-drawn outline of the scene and the location of objects and evidence within this outline. Usually not drawn to scale Although distances are measured and indicated in the sketch Sketch after photographs are taken and before anything is moved. Sketch as much as possible.

4 Measure and Outline the Area
Basic Information A steel tape is best It doesn’t stretch Use conventional units of measurement Inches Feet Centimeters Meters North should be at the top of the paper. Measure from fixed locations Walls Telephone poles Corners Curbs Outlets Any Immovable Object NOT TREES OR HEDGES!

5 Other items on a Rough Sketch
Case number Type of crime Investigator Persons assisting Direction of North Legend for the Evidence! Give each piece of evidence a letter or number code This letter or number will be in the sketch. The Legend will have a description of the evidence.

6 Finished Sketch A precise rendition of crime scene usually to scale.
Determine Scale Find the longest measurement at the scene. Divide it by the longest measurement of the paper used for sketching. Write the scale on the paper. Example of scale: ½” = 1’ small rooms ¼” = 1’ large rooms 1/8” = 1’ very large rooms ½” = 10’ large buildings 1/8” = 10’ large land area A precise rendition of crime scene usually to scale. Often this is done on a computer. Only significant items are shown. It is possible that not all the measurements are shown. Scale (1square = 1’)

7 Rectangular Coordinates
Uses TWO adjacent walls as FIXED POINTS as distances are measured at right angles. In the example, A is the evidence being sketched.

8 Baseline Method Run a baseline from one fixed point to another, from which measurements are taken at right angles.

9 Triangulation Common in outdoor scenes
Uses straight-line measurements from two fixed objects to the evidence to create a triangle with evidence in the angle formed by two straight lines.

10 Compass Point Method Uses a protractor to measure the angle formed by two lines

11 Cross-Projection Method
Presents floors and walls as the were on one surface.

12 Sketching and Blood Vocabulary Activity
As a team, read the directions (aloud!). What type of sketching method are you going to be using? How are you going to determine where in space different types of evidence are located? Choose a team member who is going to ask me questions directly. Your chosen team member will need to check in with me at the end of the period. When is this due? You will need to have the group component of the laboratory completed by the end of the period tomorrow AND the individual activity turned in on Thursday.
