1 Energy performance and Carbon emissions Assessment and Monitoring tool
Module 1: Welcome & Introduction TRAINING WORKSHOP ECAM Tool: Energy performance and Carbon emissions Assessment and Monitoring tool

2 Overall WaCCliM objectives:
INTRODUCTION Your Country & WaCCliM Overall WaCCliM objectives: Improving the carbon balance of water and wastewater utilities through the introduction of economically viable measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining or improving their services. Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

3 Module 1: Welcome & Introduction
Project Title Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM) Joint Initiative Between the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the International Water Association (IWA) On behalf of German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) as part of the International Climate Initiative (ICI) Overall Objective (Outcome) Through the introduction of GHG-reducing measures, the CO2e balance of water and wastewater companies is improved Duration 01/2014 – 01/2019 (5 years) Budget 5 Million EURO for all countries for advisory services Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

4 WaCCliM PROJECT APPROACH
Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM) Mitigation in the urban water sector Impact While contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Outcome 10 % GHG Reduction in 11 Water & Wastewater Utilities Outputs A | Pilot Measures GHG - reduction technologies in pilot utilities The overall project objective (10% GHG reduction by the end of the project’) is realized by the following output activities: A: supporting utilities with assessing their baseline performance, identifying areas of improvement and implementing mitigation measures (by giving training, advice, access and development of tools) B: developing an institutional framework and making financing mechanisms available to utilitie C: Increasing the impact by dissemination of the WaCCliM approach: via development of international guideline, events, communication material etc. B | Framework Policy framework for GHG reduction in water sector CO2 C | Multiplication Know-How transfer and dissemination of experience Activities Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

5 Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM)
HOLISTIC APPROACH Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM) Characteristic for WaCCliM is the holistic approach. An example of how stages affect each other is when leakage is reduced in the distribution stage, this will result in lower pumping requirement in the abstraction stage. When the pumping is reduced, less electricity is consumed and so less emissions are emitted. … recognizing that all waters are interconnected Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

6 Module 1: Welcome & Introduction
OVER 20 CITIES USING ECAM! WaCCliM has pilots in four countries: Mexico, Peru, Jordan and Thailand Up to 30% CO2e reduction potentials identified in WaCCliM pilot utilities by 2018 Measures that are applied could be the reduction of water losses, improved pump efficieny, increasing the amount of waste water that is being treated, cleaning of diffussers, increase of biogas production and valorization etc. Objective of the project is to set a wave in motion to increase the impact beyond the pilot utilities and countries Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Overall learning objectives of training: Understand overall global climate change context and GHG emission sources within urban water cycle. Apply web-based ECAM tool to assess baseline GHG emissions and identify opportunities for reducing emissions. Understand and be able to explain to others the purpose and the approach of the Energy performance and Carbon emissions Assessment and Monitoring Tool Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

11 Module 1: Welcome & Introduction
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Learning objectives : Understand how ECAM is embedded in WaCCliM project. Follow the structure of the training. Get to know each other and share expectations. Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

12 WaCCliM APPROACH Baseline assessment Option study
Implementation of measures Monitoring Technology Enabling Environment Baseline assessment Competence develop-ment Institutional Framework Finance mechanisms Monitoring HOW DO WE REDUCE EMISSIONS? - It starts with understanding the current situation of the utility by developing a baseline; - Then a preliminary identification of measures can be made Once measures have been selected and implemented, a process of monitoring progress can start. ECAM tool is helpful especially in developing a baseline and monitoring results, but also supports the identification of measures ECAM tool does not reduce any kg of GHG gasses by itself. The right enabling environment is an important factor for success. The project aims to increase its impact locally, working with pilot utilities, but also on a global scale. Outreach to a larger audience is realized via a knowledge platform which also contains a catalogue of solutions, offering inspiring examples of measures that can contribute to reduction of emissions. Increasing the impact Knowledge platform: tools and information (free!) Catalogue of Solutions – contributions welcome! Training on-going Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

13 Energy and Carbon Assessment and Monitoring Tool (ECAM)
KNOWLEDGE PLATFORM ‘CARBON NEUTRAL URBAN WATER’ Energy and Carbon Assessment and Monitoring Tool (ECAM) Roadmap - international guideline Catalogue of Solutions Library The WaCCliM Knowledge platform is available to inspire and support other utilities which includes: 1/ Roadmap, an international guideline, outlining the overall approach and includes ’lessons learned’ 2/ Assessment and Monitoring Tool, ECAM , a free open-source webtool 3 / Catalogue of solutions, collection of inspiring case studies and references 4 / A Library with reference materials (training materials, presentations, guidelines for bankable projects…) All tools and references are freely available on the platform. >> Let’s focus on the ECAM tool in this training! Module 1: Welcome & Introduction

15 Module 1: Welcome & Introduction
TRAINING AGENDA Let’s focus on the ECAM-Tool in this training It will bring us to cover the following topics: What are the specifications and structure of the tool and what can the tool be used for (objectives)? How to collect and document the quality of the data needed? How to perform an initial assessment and determine a baseline? Which GHG emissions are included and how to assess them in detail? How to understand where to improve, based on the baseline assessment? How do I monitor the results of improvements? These are typical questions that will be answered in the upcoming training. Module 1: Welcome & Introduction
