1 North Tech 2008-09 Student Computer Policies
Student Login Accounts Saving Student Work Student Accounts Blogging in Class Account Monitoring This presentation is being given to all faculty members at North Tech High School. The purpose is to inform staff of the regulations regarding student usage of computers. It is given at the beginning of the year at a faculty meeting so that all staff members may be familiar with the policies for the upcoming school year.

2 Student Login Accounts
Track Computer Usage Saving to Network Drive Protect Student Work Here is a list of benefits of using student login accounts. Track Computer Usage (know who’s using what and when) The students can transfer from one computer to the next by saving to the network drive. They each have a “Z folder” set up that only they can access on the network. As each student logs in to their own account, only they can access the work that they do. No one else can go in and view their work or delete it, etc.

3 Student Logins Username: Student ID Number
Password: Locker Combination with Dashes

4 Saving Student Work Students should save to their Z drive.
A folder should be set up for each class. Remind students: File  Save As  Select Z drive  Double click on folder

5 Student Email Accounts
Google – G mail, calendars, and Docs Login – access from NT website Username: a0605lutfiyya (first initial, birth month and date, last name) Password: Locker Combo with dashes A Google account has been set up for all students and this is the only account that they will have access to on the school computers. These accounts are for school and professional use (communication with teachers or other students, college applications, job applications, etc). In addition to using students may use the calendars and docs function. The docs are a wonderful resource for those students who do not have Word or PowerPoint because they can use these resources online and upload and download back at school.

6 Blogging in Class Blogging = Web logging Use Moodle for easy tracking
Other communication tools on Moodle: Wikis Discussion Forums Blogging has become a popular means of communication in our society and it makes sense to use it in the classroom. The most controlled way that we have been able to use blogging in the classrooms is by using Moodle. Since each class is set up in Moodle so that students must be entered in the class to get in, it is easy to monitor not only how much a student contributes to blogging but also exactly who is saying what. It keeps a log and all log ins are set. Other options to use for Moodle include wikis and discussion forums.

7 Account Monitoring Student Protection Hardware Protection
Avoid Cyber Bullying Keep Students Accountable Hardware Protection Prevent Inappropriate Computer Behavior Prevent Inappropriate Downloads Teachers with classroom computers are given tools and information on how to monitor the computers in their classrooms. Programs such as Synchroneyes are used to monitor student usage of computers during class. In addition, the student accounts are monitored by the tech guys. They are checked regularly for suspicious files and anything that comes up is checked into. The key is to let students know.. These computers are for school and professional usage. They should not do anything on them that they don’t want for someone to see.
