1 Force and Motion

2 Objective A force is either a push or a pull.
The motion of objects can be changed by forces. The size of the change is related to the size of the force. The change is also related to the mass of the object on which the force is being exerted. When an object does not move in response to a force, it is because the environment is applying another force.

3 Double click here > This bus is in motion. It moved from one place to another. Objects are in motion everyday.

4 Question: If this was a real bus, how did it start in motion?
The wind The motor No reason

5 Correct! The motor! The bus cannot move on it’s own. It needs something to start the motion- The motor is the force needed to start the bus! Click to learn about force!

6 What is force? Force is a push or pull needed to start an object moving. Think about a door. The door will stay in the same place unless something like your hand or the wind pushes or pulls it closed.

7 Question: Is it possible for an ant to move a brick?
Yes No

8 Correct! No, an ant isn’t strong enough to move a brick. For an object to move, the amount of force has to be strong enough to move it. Continue to learn more about motion!

9 Describing Motion Now that we know what motion is and force causes motion, let’s talk about how to describe it! You can describe motion with 3 types of words: Type of motion Speed Direction

10 Type of Motion Words These words describe what kind of motion it is:
running jumping skiing climbing

11 Speed Words These words describe the speed of the motion: fast quick
slow rapidly

12 Direction Words These words describe the direction of the motion: left
up sideways north

13 Question: How would you describe the type of motion this rabbit is doing?
Hopping Rolling Swimming

14 Correct! The type of motion is hopping!

15 Question: How would you describe the speed of a turtle?
Quick Fast Slow

16 Correct! The speed of a turtle is slow!

17 Question: What direction are these fish swimming?
Right Left Up

18 Correct! The direction the fish are swimming is left!

19 Review Motion occurs when an object moves from one place to another.
For motion to occur, there has to be a force on the object. A force is a push or pull. The force has to be stronger than the object. Got it- Click here Confused or want to know more- Click here!
