1 2018-2019 Mathematics Scheduling Recommendations and FAQs
Hudson High School Mathematics Scheduling Recommendations and FAQs

2 About this slideshow The beginning slides allow for year-by-year and course-by-course advice and recommendations. All one needs to do is find the slide with the correct grade and course (i. e. sophomore in Honors Algebra 2)! The latter slides address many of the FAQs that are common to math scheduling. Additional questions can be brought to the attention of the math teacher, guidance counselor or David Spohn (Math Department Chair) All students should consult with their teacher and counselor when making decisions

3 I am a Freshman in Honors Algebra 2
I am doing well Take Honors Precalculus You are eligible for AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci (A or Principles). You should take both before you graduate I am doing OK Consider above OR take the following courses: Trig and Precalculus I am doing poorly Repeat Honors Algebra 2 Your new grade will replace the old grade You need the solid foundation of Algebra 2 before moving on to Honors Precalculus or Trig and Precalculus Middle School Algebra 1 and Geometry will help in getting four credits for graduation

4 I am a Freshman in Honors Geometry
I am doing well Take Honors Algebra 2 I am doing OK Take Algebra 2 or Honors Algebra 2 Consult with your teacher as to which is best for you I am doing poorly Consult with your teacher You should repeat Honors Geometry (or Geometry) Your new grade will replace the old grade MS Algebra 1 will help in earning four credits You could take Algebra 2 (if your teacher recommends it) You could take Algebra 1 (if your teacher recommends it)

5 I am a freshman in Geometry
I am doing well You should take Algebra 2 (or Honors Algebra 2 if your teacher recommends it) I am doing OK You should take Algebra 2 If you did poorly in Algebra 1, then you should consider following the recommendation for “I am doing poorly” I am doing poorly You could take Algebra 1 next year You could repeat Geometry next year Your new grade will replace the old grade in either of these cases Consult with your teacher! It is better to have a solid foundation in these courses before moving on to advanced courses.

6 I am a freshman in Algebra 1
I am doing well Take Geometry (or Honors Geometry if your teacher recommends it) I am doing OK Take Geometry I am doing poorly or failing You may need to retake Algebra 1 online or in summer school OR You may need to take both Algebra 1 and Geometry next year Your new grade will replace the old grade

7 I am a sophomore in Honors Precalculus
I am doing well or OK You should take AP Calculus next year and create a plan that includes both AP Calculus, AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) before you graduate. If you are only going to take one math class each year then take AP Calculus as a junior and AP Statistics or AP Comp Sci as a senior. Discuss the level of calculus with your teacher. If you choose to take all courses (AP Calculus AB , AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci), then take AB as a junior and BC as a senior. You can take AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci as either a junior or senior I am doing poorly You should repeat Honors Precalculus next year Your new grade will replace the old grade and you will have a solid foundation in precalculus Four credits should not be an issue because you have Algebra 1 and Geometry credits carrying over from the middle school.

8 I am a sophomore in Honors Algebra 2
I am doing well Take Honors Precalculus Many students choose to take AP Statistics or AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) as a junior along with Honors Precalculus I am doing OK Consider advice for “I am doing well” OR Take Trig and Precalculus You are then eligible for AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics Take Trig and Data Analysis & Statistics You are then eligible for AP Statistics You are eligible for AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) I am doing poorly Repeat Honors Algebra 2 (or Algebra 2) Your new grade will replace the old grade You need a solid foundation in Algebra 2 before moving on to Precalculus Middle School Algebra 1 will help in getting four credits

9 I am a sophomore in Algebra 2
I am doing well Take Trig and Precalculus Then eligible for AP Calculus AB or AP Statistics You are eligible for AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) I am doing OK You are then eligible for AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics OR Take Trig (1st semester) and Data Analysis & Statistics (then eligible for AP Statistics) I am doing poorly You should retake Algebra 2 as a junior Then take two of: Trig, Precalculus, Data Analysis and Statistics, Contemporary Math, College Algebra, or Comp Sci 1 as a senior We can use your Algebra 1 credit from the MS as your 4th math credit

10 I am a sophomore in Geometry
I am doing well Take Algebra 2 (or Honors Algebra 2 if your teacher recommends it) I am doing OK Take Algebra 2 I am doing poorly I am failing You will need to take Geometry in summer school OR Take Geometry and Algebra 2 together as a junior

11 I am a sophomore in Algebra I
Assuming that you took Geometry as a freshman: I am doing well Take Algebra 2 I am doing OK I am doing poorly but passing Take Algebra 2 (This is not ideal. We have to give you a chance to graduate and you have to pass Algebra 2 and get 4 credits) Otherwise consult with your math teacher and guidance counselor about scheduling

12 I am a junior in AP courses
Continue with the AP courses and/or electives Top math students should take AP Calculus, AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) Top math students should also consider the applied fields such as AP Economics and the AP Science courses.

13 I am a junior in Honors Precalculus
I am doing well or OK See previous slide “ I am a junior in AP courses” Take at least one of: AP Calculus, AP Statistics or AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) Many top students should take more than one based on their interests/future plans Consult with your teacher for AP level I am doing poorly You could repeat Honors Precalculus OR You may wish to consider the elective courses: Data Analysis & Statistics College Algebra Contemporary Mathematics Computer Science 1 Follow the advise for those “doing well or ok”

14 I am a junior in Honors Algebra 2
I am doing well or OK Take Honors Precalculus or AP Statistics (or both) OR Take Trig and Precalculus You are eligible for AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) I am doing poorly Take at least two of the following semester courses: Trig Precalculus Data Analysis & Statistics College Algebra Contemporary Mathematics Computer Science 1

15 I am a junior in Trig and Precalculus
I am doing well or OK. You are eligible for AP Calculus AB You are eligible for AP Statistics You are eligible for AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) because you have completed Algebra 2. I am doing OK or poorly You may take one (or more) of the semester electives: Data Analysis & Statistics College Algebra Contemporary Mathematics Computer Science 1

16 I am a junior in Trig and Data Analysis & Statistics
I am doing well You are eligible for AP Statistics You are eligible for Precalculus You are eligible for AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) because you have completed Algebra 2. I am doing OK You are eligible for the following electives: College Algebra Contemporary Mathematics Computer Science 1 I am doing poorly

17 I am a junior in Algebra 2 I am doing well or OK
You are eligible for the following semester courses: Trig and Precalculus OR Trig and Data Analysis and Statistics You are eligible for AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) because you have completed Algebra 2. I am doing OK or poorly Data Analysis & Statistics College Algebra Contemporary Mathematics Computer Science 1

18 common questions at scheduling time
The following slides answer some of the commonly asked questions during scheduling Computer Science and Math What do highly selective colleges want to see on transcript? What do competitive colleges want to see on the transcript? I want to skip a math class. Is this allowed? What is Successful Completion of a Prerequisite Course? What courses are currently not NCAA sanctioned? What is the prerequisite for AP Calculus? What is the prerequisite for AP Statistics? What is the prerequisite for AP Computer Science?

19 Computer Science and Math
Students are now allowed to take computer science courses for math credit Up to one credit of computer science may be counted as math credit Students still need to complete through Algebra 2 (Unless receiving a vocational waiver) Courses that may be applied to math: Computer Science 1 (one semester, ½ credit) AP Computer Science Principles (full year, 1 credit) AP Computer Science A (full year, 1 credit)

20 What do Highly Selective Colleges want to see on a Transcript?
Students who excel at mathematics typically pursue careers in science, medicine, technology, engineering, mathematics, business, and economics. Students with a high aptitude in mathematics should complete: All AP math courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics) AP Comp Science A or AP Comp Science Principles AP Economics As many AP science courses as possible (AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and AP Environmental Science)

21 What do competitive colleges want to see on the transcript?
At a minimum, most competitive colleges want to see that a student has taken mathematics through a precalculus experience on the transcript. The following courses meet this criteria: Honors Precalculus Precalculus (semester course) The following course generally meets this criteria: Trig (semester course) Students should also attempt to have at least one AP math course on the transcript (AP Statistics or AP Calculus) It is recommended that the student have a course in coding: AP Comp Sci A, AP Comp Sci Principles or Comp Sci 1

22 I want to skip a math class. Is this allowed?
NO! However, students are able to take courses in alternative and unique fashions by using the Credit Flex option. Consult a Guidance Counselor for more information

23 What is Successful Completion of a Prerequisite Course?
Usually successful completion of prerequisites means earning an A, B or C in the course We require an A or B in the prerequisite course to move on to honors or AP courses (note: Honors Geometry requires teacher recommendation also) Consult with your teacher if you are not sure

24 What courses are currently NOT NCAA sanctioned?
The following course does not count towards the three math credits necessary for the NCAA clearinghouse. This course does count for the four credits required by the state of Ohio for graduation: College Algebra Although not NCAA sanctioned, this course uses a college text and is a great preparation for entry level college math courses.

25 What is the prerequisite for AP Calculus?
Students can become eligible for AP Calculus BC the following way: Successful completion of Honors Precalculus Successful completion of AP Calculus AB Students can become eligible for AP Calculus AB the following ways: Successful completion of Precalculus

26 What is the prerequisite for AP Statistics?
Students can become eligible for AP Statistics in the following ways: Successful completion of Honors Algebra 2 Successful completion of Precalculus Successful completion of DAS (Data Analysis & Statistics )

27 What is the prerequisite for AP Computer Science?
AP Computer Science Principles Concurrent enrollment or previous completion of Algebra 2 AP Computer Science A Successful completion of Algebra 2 Successful completion of Computer Science 1 (Or teacher approval)
