1 Mixtures and Compounds
Notes SPI Mixtures and Compounds Science Learning Intention: Differentiate between mixtures and compounds. Purpose: to understand that not all combinations of matter result in chemical reactions. Success Criteria I will show that I understand this topic by earning a 90 or higher on the quiz. I Can Statement By the end of this unit I will be able to say... ...I can tell the difference between mixtures and compounds.

2 Air Steel Salt Water Blood Milk H2O NaCl CO2 C6H12O6
What is a Mixture? When you combine two or more substances together, if no chemical reaction occurs, then it is called a mixture. Any changes you observe are only physical changes. No new substances are formed in mixtures. Mixtures can be fairly easily separated back into their parts. Mixture Examples: Air Steel Salt Water Blood Milk What is a Compound? two or more different elements that are chemically bonded in a chemical reaction to form a new substance. compounds CAN NOT be easily separated Compound Examples: H2O NaCl CO2 C6H12O6

3 Science Notes Two Ways How do I know if something is a mixture or not?
SPI Mixtures or Compounds Notes Science How do I know if something is a mixture or not? Two Ways 1) Mixtures can be fairly easily taken back apart. 2) If no chemical reaction occurred when you combined the substances, then it is a mixture.

4 How to separate apart mixtures
Four Methods By hand By filtration By distillation By magnetism

5 How do I recognize compounds?
Remember: compounds are formed during chemical reactions. So, when you combine two or more items, if you observe indications of a chemical reaction, then it is a compound and not a mixture Note: Below are some common indicators of chemical reactions. Remember our memory tricks: HOPESR and 4FP4CG. Explosion Flash or Light Temp. change Smoke/odor/gas Sound (sizzle, snap, crackle, pop, whistle, bang, or boom) Fizzing or Foaming Precipitate is formed If you don't see one or more of these indicators, then it probably is a mixture and not a compound.

6 Air N O Ar EXAMPLE: A Mixture
Nitrogen 7 N 14.0 Oxygen 8 O 16.0 Argon 18 Ar 39.9 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% Argon and other gases When these items mix together no chemical reaction occurs.

7 Steel Fe C EXAMPLE: A Mixture SPI 0807.9.4 SPI 0807.9.4
Mixtures or Compounds SPI Mixtures or Compounds EXAMPLE: A Mixture Steel Iron 26 Fe 55.8 Carbon 6 C 12.0 98.5% Iron (Fe) and 1.5% Carbon (C) When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.

8 Salt Water EXAMPLE: A Mixture SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds
Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Saltwater Ingredients: 3.5 % dissolved salts (mostly NaCl) and 96.5%Water (H2O) When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.

9 Blood EXAMPLE: A Mixture SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds
Blood Ingredients: 55% Plasma (consists of 90% water, 8% Protein, 2% other) 45% Red/White blood cells and Platelets When these items mix together no chemical reaction occurs.

10 Milk EXAMPLE: A Mixture SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds
Milk Ingredients: 88% Water, 5% Carbohydrates, 3% Fat, 3% Protein, 1% Minerals When these items are mixed together no chemical reaction occurs.

11 MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures
SPI Mixtures or Compounds MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures Bag of Sand Soup Salad Rock and Mineral Particles Water, noodles, chicken, vegetables Lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, spinach No chemical reaction occurs when these mixtures are formed. (Only physical changes!)

12 Mixtures MORE EXAMPLES SPI 0807.9.4 Mixtures or Compounds
Energy Drinks Soft Drinks Tea Kool-Aid Drinks No chemical reaction occurs when these mixtures are formed. (Only physical changes!)

13 MORE EXAMPLES: Mixtures
Hamburgers Tacos Pizza No chemical reaction occurs when these mixtures are formed. (Only physical changes!) Note: Cooking results in chemical reactions. However, combining items after cooking forms mixtures.

14 Kool-Aid drink is a mixture
NOTE: A mixture may contain one or more compounds, as long as they do not react with each other (like Kool-Aid for example) Kool-Aid drink is a mixture Kool-Aid Ingredients: Water, sugar, flavoring agent, and a coloring agent Kool-Aid contains two compounds: (A) water (H2O) & (B) sugar/sucrose (C12H22O11). Yet these ingredients DO NOT chemically react with each other.
