1 Elements, Compounds, Molecules, and Mixtures

2 Bell Work 11/17/15 What do salt, sugar, baking soda , and water all have in common?

3 Bell Work 11/17/15 What do salt, sugar, baking soda , and water all have in common? They are all compounds! Because most elements take part in chemical changes easily, they are rarely found alone in nature. Instead, they are found combined with other elements as compounds.

4 Student Learning Objectives:
SPI Can I differentiate between a mixture and a compound SPI Can I interpret the results of an investigation to determine whether a physical or chemical change has occurred. TOC: # EMC Foldable

5 Video TOC # EMC Foldable Elements Compounds Molecules Mixtures

6 Inside the foldable: Definition: Examples:

7 Element: A pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary means Element = One or more of the same atoms NOT bonded together.

8 Gold – Au Silver – Ag Oxygen – O Hydrogen – H
Examples: Gold – Au Silver – Ag Oxygen – O Hydrogen – H

9 All compounds are molecules!
A pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together All compounds are molecules!

10 Water – H2O Carbon Dioxide – CO2 Table salt – NACL
Examples: Water – H2O Carbon Dioxide – CO2 Table salt – NACL Table Sugar- C12H22O11

11 Molecule: A group of atoms (same or different) held together by a chemical bond. NOT all molecules are compounds Examples: Water – H2O Oxygen – O2 Hydrogen – H2

12 Video Elbow Partner: Discuss what is the difference between and molecule and a compound?

13 Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded and are not in fixed proportion. Most natural substances are mixtures. NO Chemical reaction occurs when you combine 2 or more substances. No fizzing, No smoke, No precipitate, No explosion, No heat or light given off

14 Examples: Tossed salad Oil & vinegar Bowl of cereal Kool-Aid
Salt Water

15 Discuss with Elbow Partner: Element, compound, or mixture?

16 Element, compound, or mixture?
