The Odyssey

2 Directions To make up the Pre-Reading Scavenger Hunt, complete the next 4 steps. Take the notes you are assigned in each step on a sheet of lined paper.

3 Step 1- Learn about Homer
Read this information about Homer/Background to The Odyssey on page 369 of your textbook. (To access the online textbook, visit my.hrw.com and login using the username and password provided at the beginning of the year). After reading the information record… THINK- Your overall ideas and takeaways from the reading PUZZLE- What puzzles or questions you have about the information. EXPLORE- What you would like to learn more about from the information.

4 Step 2- Value of “Xenia” One value in ancient Greek culture was the practice of xenia This custom called for treating all visitors, even complete strangers, with hospitality. Specifically, this meant asking no questions of your guests, and providing guests with food and refreshments, clean clothes, a clean place to sleep, etc. On your note sheet, respond to the questions below: What does the practice of “xenia” tell you about Greek culture? What could be some benefits and/or drawbacks of this practice?

5 Step 3- Greek Gods and Goddesses
Do some research on one of the following Greek gods/goddess: Poseidon, Zeus, or Athena Then, write an Epic/Homeric Simile (a simile that extends across several lines) to describe this god/goddess.

6 Step 4- The Trojan War Read about The Trojan War on page 368 of your textbook. Then, write the following about the war: A SENTENCE… A PHRASE… OR A WORD… … that sums up this event, along with your reasoning for why you selected this.
