2 9 Starter for 5! Give an example of a violent protest. E.g. the London riots in 2012 Give an example of someone who organised peaceful protests to achieve their aims. Martin Luther King Give a Christian quote that could be used against terrorism and violent protest. Blessed are the peacemakers, Thou shall not kill Explain briefly two reasons for war. Greed – wanting more land, money and power. Self-defence – defending your country against invasion and defending your way of life What does the quote ‘let he who has never sinned throw the first stone mean?’ We have all sinned so we should not judge others, instead we should show forgiveness.

3 Hiroshima: Dropping the bomb
What is your reaction to this? Draw out the idea that it ended the second world war and brought about peace, therefore saving thousands more lives. Was it worth it? Just War. Can this much force be justified?

4 Nuclear Weapons Learning Objective: To explore the use of nuclear weapons in modern warfare. I can define the term nuclear weapon. I can give examples of nuclear weapons in modern warfare I can evaluate whether nuclear weapons should be used

5 Some Nuclear Bomb factoids...

6 Nuclear Factoids... The heat generated by a nuclear explosion can reach about 9,000 degrees, which is hotter than the surface of the Sun. The thermal component accounts for about 1/3rd of a nuclear weapons power. It’s hot enough to permanently burn an object’s shadow onto a surface behind it.

7 Nuclear Factoids... It takes as little as 35 pounds of enriched Uranium, and as little as 9 pounds of enriched Plutonium to construct a nuclear weapon. Luckily, the facilities required to enrich raw Uranium are expensive, and are larger than 5 football fields.

8 If a Nuclear Bomb was dropped on Hedge End...

9 What is a nuclear weapon?
Keyword: Nuclear Weapon Weapons that work by a nuclear reaction that destroy huge areas and kills thousands of people. Example: Hiroshima and Nagasaki 60,000 people immediately died in the Japananese city of Hiroshima but the death toll rose to around 140,000 in the months later as people died from the radiation. Nagasaki was also destroyed three days later. Six days after this attack, WW2 ended.

10 Nuclear Weapons Official Chart Show
Look underneath your chair to see if you have a piece of paper. Read it, then stick it up on the board in the correct order. How quickly can you do it? – play chart music as they do this.

11 Nuclear Weapons in the world today…
Nuclear proliferation – it is the increase of countries which have nuclear weapons.

12 Nuclear Weapons Learning Objective: To explore the use of nuclear weapons in modern warfare. I can define the term nuclear weapon. I can give examples of nuclear weapons in modern warfare I can evaluate whether nuclear weapons should be used

13 Disarmament vs. Deterrent
Disarmament = the belief that all countries should destroy all of their nuclear weapons. Deterrent = the more countries that have nuclear weapons, the more countries will be put off using them. Unilateral – this where one country gets rid of their nuclear weapons. Multilateral – this is where all countries in the world gets rid of their nuclear weapons.

14 Trident Nuclear Weapons
Britain has recently voted to update it’s Trident Nuclear Weapons programme. Imagine you have been part of the vote and are being interviewed on your decision. Explain why you have chosen to vote for or against. This can be done on post it notes, as a role play or paragraphs in books.
