To the amazement of his companions, Gandhi calmly took off his other shoe and threw it back along the track to land close to the first shoe. Asked by a fellow passenger why he did that, Gandhi replied, 'the poor man who finds the shoe lying on the track will now have a pair he can use.'

Mohandas K Gandhi was born in 1869 in North West India. His family were members of a Vaishya caste-group. In 1888, when He was nineteen Gandhi left India and went to England to study to become a lawyer at University College, London. During this time he mixed with people who were interested in learning about and discussing different religions and beliefs. He read (for the first time) the Bhagavad Gita and the teachings of Jesus, which he is said to have found Inspirational. He spent three years studying in England.

9 Gandhi qualified as a lawyer in 1891 and returned to India
Gandhi qualified as a lawyer in 1891 and returned to India. However, he was not very successful in his work because he was too shy to speak up in court. In 1893, he accepted a year-long contract from an Indian firm in South Africa, which at that time was part of the British Empire. In South Africa Gandhi was shocked at how badly the British rulers treated the Africans and the Indian people who lived there. He made a stand against a system of racial segregation called APARTHEID.

Gandhi was travelling in the first class compartment of a train. A British man entered the carriage and was furious to see him there. He called the Railway officer, and Gandhi was ordered off the train. Gandhi refused, claiming that he had paid for a first class ticket and so was entitled to sit there. Gandhi stood up to an unjust system, but refused to use violence. How effective were his actions? THINK PAIR SHARE Do you think it is possible to fight for justice without using violence?

11 “God is truth. The way to truth lies through ahimsa (non violence).”
This incident changed the whole course of his life. Because he was a very committed Hindu Gandhi believed in ahimsa, which means non-violence to all living things. He decided to fight injustice with the weapon of Truth and non violence. Later on, he named this weapon Satyagraha.

What do you think Gandhi meant when he said this? Do you agree with him? Why?

13 After twenty years in South Africa Gandhi decided to go home to India.
After fighting injustice and discrimination in South Africa, he now saw how much also existed in his homeland. Gandhi claimed that the caste system had nothing to do with religion The discrimination of castes, argued Gandhi, was the result of custom, and that it blinded some Hindus to their true spiritual life. He renamed the outcastes ‘Harijan’, meaning children of God.

14 Treatment of women Gandhi also spoke out against some of the ways that women were treated in India at the time, such as: Female infanticide Child marriage Dowry giving Sati He did not just oppose injustice towards women, but also campaigned for improved education for girls and the advancement of women in business and politics.
