2 What is it? Visual rhetoric is a form of persuasion that uses images to create meaning or prepare an argument Like traditional rhetoric it attempts to persuade Unlike traditional rhetoric it relies on language and graphic imagery to convey meaning

3 Activity The picture on the next slide is the second century Roman statesman Aule Metele It has become the archetype of the noble rhetor or public speaker in Classical Roman times Augustus Caesar around 20 BC imitated his pose for his official portrait Examine the picture and note the physical features of the statue that suggests trustworthiness

4 How does this suggest trustworthiness?

5 Ethos, Pathos, Logos Let’s read to connect these rhetorical devices to visual rhetoric.
