1 Preparing Solutions

2 The ability to prepare solutions correctly is one of the more important skills of a laboratory scientist. Solutions of the proper concentration are necessary to make correct calculations and conclusions in a lab.

3 The most common piece of glassware used in preparing solutions is a volumetric flask.
Volumetric flasks have one purpose – measuring a specific volume of liquid. Notice that there is just one line that appears on the neck of the flask.

4 Write the steps you would perform to make 200. mL of a 1
Write the steps you would perform to make 200. mL of a 1.25 M solution of NaCl (aq) given a bottle of 4.00 M NaCl (aq).

5 Note: This is a dilution
Determine the volume of the 4.00 M solution needed. Measure out 62.5 mL of the 4.00 M solution with a graduated cylinder and put it into a 200 mL volumetric flask. Add distilled water, shaking as you go, until reaching the line on the flask.

6 Write the steps that you would perform to make 100. mL of a 4
Write the steps that you would perform to make 100. mL of a 4.0 M solution of H2SO4 (aq) given a stock solution of 18 M H2SO4 (aq).

7 Note: We are diluting ACID
Determine the volume of the 18 M solution needed. Always Add Acid! Put about 50 mL of distilled water into a 100 mL volumetric flask, first. Then, measure out 22.2 mL of the 18 M solution and add it to the flask. Add distilled water, shaking as you go, until reaching the line on the flask.

8 Write the steps that you would perform to make 500. mL of a
Write the steps that you would perform to make 500. mL of a .15 M solution of AgNO3 (aq) given solid AgNO3.

9 Procedure Determine the mass of AgNO3 needed for the solution.
Measure out 12.7 g of AgNO3 and put it into a 500 mL volumetric flask. Add distilled water, shaking as you go, until reaching the line on the flask.

10 For all problems, you should be specific about what glassware you will use and the specific amounts of chemicals you will use. Show ALL calculations.
