1 Reference data sets, centroids, scales, codes, river stretches… A proposal for visualisation in WISE
Jorge Rodriguez Romero, Violeta Vinceviciene DG ENV unit D.2 GIS workshop: January 2008, Dublin

2 Aggregation level (areal) Hydrological features Coding system
- EU level Large rivers >5000 km2 National Main rivers >500 km2 Scale Code-Rivers RBD MS working scale (or CCM2) >10 to >100 km2 Sub-units + Code-WBs Water bodies Code-point info Point info

3 The proposal Reference dataset main rivers (catchment >500 km2) should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation River water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches, not as points We should have information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics Various datasets should be connected through coding

4 The proposal Reference dataset main rivers (catchment >500 km2) should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation River water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches, not as points We should have information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics Various datasets should be connected through coding

5 Main rivers should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation
Main rivers (>500 km2) Additional rivers at MS working scale (e.g. >100 km2)

6 Main rivers should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation
Main rivers will be the only EU-wide, homogeneous, connected river network and will be the least common denominator for visualisation (this we should have for all!) The basis of main rivers: article 3 submissions

7 Article 3 current status
Main rivers should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation Article 3 current status Article 3 minus rivers <500 km2

8 The proposal Reference dataset main rivers (catchment >500 km2) should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation River water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches, not as points We should have information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics Various datasets should be connected through coding

9 Water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches
¿? ¿? Water bodies? ¿?

10 Water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches

11 Centroids + river network Centroids + river stretches
Water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches WHAT DO WE HAVE NOW AS WATER BODIES: Centroids only Centroids + river network Centroids + river stretches

12 Water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches
IN ADDITION, WHAT IS A CENTROID? From ESRI GIS dictionary:

13 Water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches
ARTICLE 5 CENTROIDS: WIDE BIODIVERSITY RBD -x midpoint RBD -y: ???? RBD -z: ???????????? Midpoint used in several MSs

14 The proposal Reference dataset main rivers (catchment >500 km2) should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation River water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches, not as points We should have information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics Various datasets should be connected through coding

15 Information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics

16 Information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics
15 water bodies? 35 water bodies!

Information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics Necessary to produce such nice maps:

18 The proposal Reference dataset main rivers (catchment >500 km2) should be the EU-wide, homogeneous basis of visualisation River water bodies on main rivers should be presented as stretches, not as points We should have information of all water bodies to be included in sub-unit or RBD statistics Various datasets should be connected through coding

19 Various datasets should be connected through coding
Coding is essential to answer basic questions To which river belongs this water body? To which water body belongs this monitoring station? This CANNOT be answered adequately by geographical operations, i.e. xy coordinates are not sufficient In implementing the coding we should take into account: In the future we should aim at developing more detailed main rivers reference dataset (e.g. from >500 to >100 km2) This means it would be advantageous to have the coding implemented in a very detailed dataset: CCM2 Is it possible to transfer the coding from CCM2 to main rivers through spatial overlay?

20 Summary of the proposal
Do not use centroids to visualise water bodies Main rivers should be the least common denominator for visualising This means we need, as a minimum, river stretches for main rivers All water bodies should also be reported as centroids for allowing sub-unit, RBD or national analysis If any MS reports more detailed data on river stretches, that is very welcome and can be displayed in WISE viewer beyond a certain zoom in (but these water bodies will be disconnected across the borders) Coding is essential and should be implemented On the same basis, future enhancements of WISE can enlarge the scale of main rivers (e.g. from >500 to >10 km2)
