Do Now Copy the following definitions into your notebook:

11 Vocabulary please write these definitions in your notebook
Atmospheric Pressure: the force exerted on a surface by the mass of the air above it; also called air pressure Barometer: a weather tool that measures air pressure Kinetic energy: energy of motion Feel free to add some definitions in your own words, or an example to these

12 Big Ideas Please add this to your Big Ideas page:
When a volume of air is compressed, particles are closer together, and the air becomes more dense

13 Barometer Images Examples of barometers
The prefix baro- means pressure The suffix –meter means measure Air pressure can be measured in inches (of mercury) or bars. A bar is equal to the pressure exerted by the air in the atmosphere at sea level. The millibar (mb) is equal to 1/1000 of a bar and is usually used to measure atmospheric pressure. Average sea-level air pressure is mb

14 Barometer in a Bottle video
Look at the picture What can we do to change the pressure reading on the barometer in the jar?

15 Barometer in a Bottle video
Why do you think the pressure reading changed? What could we do to decrease the air pressure reading?

16 Response Sheet-Investigation 3
Put your name on the BACK of the page Answer the questions on Notebook sheet 6 You have 10 minutes to answer Sheets will be collected

23 Vocabulary Humidity- water vapor in the air
Copy these Weather definitions: Humidity- water vapor in the air Meteorologist- a scientist who studies the weather Meteorology- the scientific study of weather Precipitation- rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground

24 Vocabulary Copy these definitions: Prediction- an estimation about a future event based on data or experience severe weather-out-of-the-ordinary and extreme weather conditions (dangerous) Temperature- a measure of how hot or cold the air is

25 Vocabulary Weather- the condition of the air around us
Copy these definitions: Weather- the condition of the air around us Wind- air in motion

26 Big Ideas Cardinals: Put these big ideas in the Big Ideas section of your NB Golds: Draw a line in your Notebook or page and copy the following:

27 Big Ideas Weather is the condition of Earth’s atmosphere at a given time in a given place Severe weather has the potential to cause death and destruction in the environment

28 Big Ideas Meteorology is the science of weather, and meteorologists are the people who study Earth’s weather Weather and climate are different
