1 Year 2 Welcome Meeting for parents
12th September 2018

2 Aims for this evening Introduce the Year 2 team
Explain the expectations of behaviour and learning for your child Provide ideas on how to support your child’s learning throughout the year Outline key dates for the year Answer any queries you may have

4 A ‘normal’ week in Y2 English and Maths lessons each day
RE lessons twice a week Science one lesson a week Daily phonics lesson Creative Curriculum - Our Ocean, Our World - geography and art focus.  Spanish, Music, PE, ICT once a week taught by outside specialists An additional PE each week Handwriting, Spellings and guided reading Maths meetings saving plastics and bringing some bits in The trips – The Deep 11th October, Butterfly House 22nd November

6 Key Approaches ‘Maths Mastery’ was introduced across the school in September 2016 This year Mastery English has been introduced Maths Mastery Key mathematical concepts are taught and then applied and connected to other areas of learning throughout the year and beyond. This approach deepens understanding, and consolidates knowledge and skills. Mastery English - An English curriculum rooted in the use of high quality texts which are used expertly by inspirational, passionate teachers to produce children who can write exciting, technically skilled extended pieces of writing at the end of each unit. Reading comprehension and grammatical knowledge are taught in context to facilitate deep and meaningful learning. Growth Mindset – supports positive attitudes towards learning and high self esteem. It refers to a way of thinking, learning and taking on challenges. A person with a growth mindet is open to constructive criticism, takes feedback , pushes themselves outside their comfort zone and shows resilience and perseverance. Studies show that it is people with a growth mindset as opposed to affixed mindset who achiev in life are successful in all thye do and are happy. Of course this is exactly what we want for all our children Purpose and culture - A strong, clear purpose and culture will support us to develop independent, resilient, confident learners, and will have a huge impact upon behaviour management.

love to learn new things and be challenged always have a go not give up easily persevere always try to improve by listening to criticism know that we can be clever at anything so we must practice the things we find hard

9 Expectations of behaviour
‘Good to be green’ system – green, yellow & red cards Golden Time – 30mins each Friday afternoon House points reward system in place. Encouraging independent behaviour skills. Marbles - Rainbow class culture and purpose

10 Why are rules and procedures important?
Provides the structure and boundaries that enable successful group learning to take place Helps teachers to build relationships with pupils Supports pupils to make socially acceptable choices Why are rules and procedures important? •Improve motivation, confidence and self esteem •Increases concentration and reduces distractions and anxiety •Helps everyone to understand that actions have consequences • Makes independent learning possible Provides the structure and boundaries that enable successful group learning to take place Helps teachers to build relationships

11 Rewards include coming into school in a choice of own clothes, being given additional play time having a house party.    Golden Time on a Friday afternoon where children are able to select activities as a reward.

13 Children who have made wrong choices during the week will lose Golden time, (although they can contract to earn it back by showing their teacher that they are really trying to improve.)

16 Class Culture At St. Joseph’s we want to develop a strong, clear purpose and culture. This will support us to develop independent, resilient, confident learners, and will have a huge impact upon behaviour management.

Reading a variety of genres for enjoyment Practising time tables and corresponding division facts Using and applying maths in everyday scenarios Helping with home learning activities Supporting life skills in children Discussing home learning to reinforce learning in the school environment
