5 ITU-T SG5 Regional Group for the Arab Region
Objective: The dissemination of the studies on electromagnetic environment, human exposure to electromagnetic field (EMF), e-waste and circular economy, achieving energy efficiency, smart energy and utilizing ICT for dealing with climate change; to encourage the participation of its countries. ARAB STATES REGIONAL INITIATIVES: ITU-RG - ARB Regional - July 2017 (Tunis,Tunisia): Training Workshop on ICT for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Arab Region. Requested to creation of smart cities.

6 SG5 & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

7 Safe and reliable use of ICT
Q9/5 - Climate change and assessment of information and communication technology (ICT) in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Safe and reliable use of ICT Q9/5 main study areas are: Analyse how ICTs could support the fulfilment of the SDGs, Connect 2020, Paris Agreement, etc. Examine how the impacts of using ICTs could be assessed for the different verticals in relation to the effects of climate change (e.g. energy, agriculture, housing, fisheries, health, water, etc.). Explore how ICTs can be used in the adaptation of the different verticals to the effects of climate change (e.g. energy, agriculture, housing, fisheries, health, water, etc.). Identify best practices related to climate change adaption including but not limited to urban and rural areas (e.g. energy, agriculture, housing, fisheries, health, water, etc.).

8 SG5 & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Develop international standards to protect the environment. Assist countries to develop policies and implement ITU-T standards on climate change adaptation and mitigation. Help companies becoming more sustainable and socially responsible. Research and development on areas which include e-waste, energy efficiency and smart sustainable cities. Raise awareness on role of ICT in tackling environmental challenges. Using ICTs to protect the environment

9 Smart City : ‘‘A smart sustainable city is an innovative city that uses information and communication technologies (ITC) and other means to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social, environmental as well as cultural aspects’’

10 Smart Agriculture for Smart City
: There is no denying the fact that agriculture is the lifeline of all human development. Agriculture has been one of the major fuels if not the most important.

12 Climate Risk Mitigation Project

13 Climate Risk Mitigation Project
The project Established by Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Physical Development (MoENRPD)), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in October 2014. It is best solution in Sudan is to improve national and decentralized capacities to provide timely forecasts and early warnings, as well as complementary micro-finance and weather-based index insurance services for rain-fed farmers and pastoralists to improve their ability to manage and adapt to climate risks. Memorandum of Understanding Between (HCENR) and (TPRA) in December 2016 to facilitate in providing telecom equipment and services.

14 Climate Risk Mitigation Project
Benefits: Use ICT for early warning. Establish an institutional framework and capacity building that will lead to climate monitoring, weather forecasting and early warning, on a sustainable basis. Develop capacity to disseminate and disseminate weather indicators to address the impacts of climate risks and promote long-term adaptation. Provide a financing service for farmers and pastoralists to increase their ability to adapt to their livelihoods.

15 Thank you! ITU-T, Environment Climate Change and Circular Economy
