2 The Move West Continues
Between 1791 and 1803 four new states were added: Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio Between 1816 and 1821 Indiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Alabama, and Missouri became states These new states showed how dramatic the growth of the United States westward was. Place 1800 1820 West of Appalachian Mountains 387,000 settlers 2.4 million Ohio 45,000 settlers 581,000

3 The Move West Continues
Western families often gathered together for social events Men played sports, such as wrestling Women met to quilt or sew together Life was not easy out West, these families came to the West to make new lives for themselves and their families As these new families moved West, they brought with them their hopes and dreams and more importantly their culture and way of life

4 Canals DeWitt led the plan to connect New York to the Great lakes region. Canals are artificial waterways. The Erie Canal has locks to rise or lower the water levels through elevated terrain. The Erie canal took over 8 years to complete.
