Bachelor’s of Science Health Care Administration Program Newsletter Volume 1 | Issue 1 Inside This Issue 1 Message from the Program Director 1 About your Program Director 1 In-demand Management Skills 2 Student Spotlight 2 Health Care Administration Degree 2 Late Assignment Policy Message from the Program Director By Donnie Smith, Ed. S., MBA, BSN, BS Health Care Administration Program Director Welcome to the first issue of the BSHCA program newsletter. I am pleased to present you with information about Pima Medical Institute, the BSHCA program, and industry news that you should find beneficial in your journey of attaining the academic and career goals you have set in mind. The majority of you have mentioned that you came into the BSHCA program to give you an opportunity of getting into leadership and management, and not necessarily in your field of clinical study from your previous education program choice. UPCOMING DATES BSHCA Start Dates: March 4th July 1st October 28th BSHCA Graduation Dates: February 24th June 16th October 13th BSHCA offers you an opportunity to be exposed to many areas of health care: accounting, marketing, policy, law, emergency response, leadership, management, reimbursement, information management and marketing. This will allow you the opportunity to lead in many of these areas with the knowledge you have attained in this program. With our third cohort having graduated in February, our graduates are already making an impact in the health care field. Advice: (1) do not wait until after graduation to secure a job in the health care field if you are not currently working in it, as you want to leverage your BSHCA degree to attain a leadership position with experience, (2) make the most of your connections you gain through the program in the industry to open as many doors as possible for you. About your Program Director Prior to becoming the Program Director for the BS Health Care Administration, I was a program director for two health care programs in the Northern Virginia Area, spent 12 years in the pharmaceutical industry representing pediatrics to critical care medicines, PICU and NICU nursing, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. I am married (Ayleen), have two amazing children (Ines and Quintin), and two loving dogs (Rogelio and Roberta). I enjoy skiing, hiking, sports and crossfit. Also, I am also a full-time online Ed.D. student with an emphasis on educational leadership. My favorite sports teams are West Virginia University (College) and Pittsburgh (Professional). page | 2 Late Assignment Policy Student Spotlight Your instructor may offer a ONE-TIME “OOPs Pass” for a freebie late assignment. An OOPs Pass will give you 72 hours from the original due date to submit your assignment with no late penalty. The key here—THIS CAN ONLY BE USED FOR 1 ASSIGNMENT , AND ONCE IT IS USED, NO MORE LATE ASSIGNMENTS! If you do not use your OOPs Pass, there MAY be a bonus point incentive for you. This means that it will behoove you to NOT use it and to be on time or ahead with all your assignments. Without the use of your OOPs pass, late assignments can be submitted within 24 hours of the original due date for a 10% point deduction. After 24 hours your grade is a zero and you will not be able to submit your assignment!! Should you have a dire circumstance, and you have 1) communicated with your instructor AND your Program Director and 2) submitted appropriate documentation to your Program Director to support the circumstance , you will be given up to one week from the original due date to submit your assignment. THIS MUST BE APPROVED BY YOUR PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND IS NOT AN AUTOMATIC! It is up to you to contact your instructor AND your Program Director. “Working in the healthcare field is my passion! I want to be able to help others and make a difference in the world. My goal in getting my BSHCA degree was to be an example to my children, gain knowledge in the field of healthcare management, and develop my leadership skills in hopes of becoming a successful healthcare administrator in my own home health facility. Working a full-time job and going to school full-time can be a huge challenge. I want to thank all of my PMI instructors who aided in my success. I appreciate the hard work, time, perseverance, and commitment that you contributed to both my academic and personal, growth. Thank you all for always inspiring me and encouraging me to give nothing less than my best, and for teaching and providing me with the knowledge and skills that I need to become a successful healthcare administrator and owner. The BSHCA program and my instructors have instilled in me the confidence to face my fears and pursue my dream. As a result of this program I am in the process of starting my own home health facility and I hope to have it up and running within the next year. Thanks PMI!” Tameka Caquias-Quinones BSHCA Graduate Health Care Administration Bachelor’s Degree This policy does not apply to discussion boards. NO credit will be granted for discussion posts outside the scheduled discussion dates. New health care regulations, technology advances and an aging population have created a booming market for health care administrators. More than 73,000 medical and health service manager positions are expected to be created through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Responsible for the oversight of medical facilities ranging from large hospitals to rehabilitation centers and nursing homes, health care administrators coordinate care, create schedules, manage finances and work with medical staff. In an online health care administration and management bachelor's degree program, students will study business and management with a health care slant. While most graduates use the degree to enter health care management, they aren’t limited to that field. The fundamental analytical, communication and technical skills that students develop in the program could be used to work in areas such as human resources in other fields.
