1 KS1 Parent Information Evening
Monday 15th October 2018

2 Smooth transition In the first term children who were emerging into the Early Learning Goals need the opportunity to achieve those goals- foundation for the National Curriculum. Children who achieved the expected level for the ELGs start the National Curriculum

3 How KS1 children learn Up to the age of 7 children learn through:
Being very active Sensory play & exploration First hand experience Being outside Using play to find out and explore Being highly creative Having the chance to return to their play & learning Being independent Working and play with others

4 Year 1 Curriculum Term 1 Maths and English

5 Structure of the Year 1 day
Maths activity English activity Theme/Topic activity (science/geography, history, art,R.E. etc…) Plan-Do-Review (structured child initiated play) Independent Learners Letters & Sounds is taught each day P.E.- whole class lessons

8 Assessment Ongoing formative assessment Beat That Challenge- Learn its
Quizzes to check over maths learning for a half term Letters and Sounds- end of phase checks Year 1 Phonics screening (Phase 5) Interventions will take place when children are identified as needing extra support or a boost to their skills.- e.g. Early morning readers Learn to Read

9 At the age of 7 and generally by the Summer term most children are ready to:
Learn in larger, whole class groups Think in abstract ways Carry out more adult initiated or led activities Can track across a page of text /IWB to read and find out information

10 Year 2 Curriculum Term 1 Maths and English

11 Structure of the Year 2 day
Maths activity English activity Theme/Topic activity (science/geography, history, art,R.E. etc…) Play For Learning (structured adult or child initiated play) Independent Learners Letters & Sounds is taught each day DEAR time 4 times a week P.E.- whole class lessons twice a week

12 DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Time
Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri am Children ability grouped. Rotate throughout the week around Group Guided Reading (teacher led), Reading books, book corner books, book from home). Reading for pleasure! Individual reading often heard by TA’s, experienced adult helpers. Teachers will hear individual readers as and when they feel it is needed. Year 2- Pls hear your child read 4 times a week.

13 Play For Learning Challenge approach used in Year 2 where a selection of adult initiated curriculum- linked challenges are available for the children to choose from. When children finish at a table activity (Maths/Eng/Topic) they are able to choose from a selection of blue activities that reinforce key learning from the week Challenge is ensured though the continuous provision that is available

14 My Challenge choice is………. A review of my challenge
Play For Learning My Challenge choice is………. A review of my challenge ( children have to reflect on the activity ) Written in busy books which allows us to keep track of the choices they are making!

15 Reinforcing science work about different habitats

16 Building a multi-layered pirate ship and explain design (DT)

17 Lego construction of a building that could be found in Mickleover (Geog)

18 Summer Term Majority of children will have turned 7 and are ready for a more formal setting. Time to prepare for formal tests and transition into Year 3. Work closely with Phase Lead for Year 3 /4 (Mrs McBride) to ensure a smooth transition for the pupils

19 Assessment Ongoing formative assessment
Times Table probes (x10, x5, x2) Quizzes to check over maths learning for a half term Letters and Sounds- weekly spelling checks Interventions will take place when children are identified as needing extra support or a boost to their skills.- e.g. Read it Write It, Phase 5 Letters and Sounds group Friday pm teacher led intervention groups to plug gaps from the week

20 Year 2 SATS – May 2019 Children will complete National Maths and English tests. Completed in small groups. LOW KEY! Pupils are used to completing assessments and these National tests will feel no different to them.

21 Homework Please have a look on the website if you have not read the recent letter regarding homework. Letters and sounds homework (Y1 and 2) Beat That challenge (Y1) Times Table probes (Y2) Maths skills sheets occasionally in Year 2 to practise key skills and reinforce learning
