2. SOME DEFINITIONS EXPLAINED:
Phoneme
This is the smallest unit of sound in a word.
How many phonemes can you hear in cat?

3. A grapheme:
These are the letters that represent the phoneme.
Children need to practise recognising the grapheme and saying the phoneme that it represents.
The grapheme could be 1 letter, 2 letters or more!

7. SPLIT DIGRAPHS: Vowels- vowel house have 2 sounds (long and short)
‘Magic e’
Split digraph- vowel and ‘e’ split by a consonant
Exceptions to the rules- ’tricky words.’

8. SEGMENTING: The skill of ‘Chopping Up’ the word to spell it out.
Identifying the individual sounds in a spoken word (e.g. h-i-m , sh-o-p) and writing down letters for each sound (phoneme) to form the words - him and shop.

9. BLENDING:
This is recognising the letter sounds in a written word.
For example:
c-u-p
and merging or ‘blending’ them in the order in which they are written to pronounce the word ‘cup’.
Encourage children to segment and blend when they come across an unfamiliar word.

10. SEGMENTING AND BLENDING PRACTICE

11. SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD
Encourage your child to look out for graphemes as they read- give them time and praise them for having a go.
Add sound buttons underneath words.
Lots of opportunities to read new words (segmenting and blending)
Discuss the meanings of new words.

13. PHONICS SCREENING
In June all Year 1 children will be expected to undertake a phonics check.
The children are asked to read 40 words- a combination of 20 real words and 20 pseudo (made up) words.
Aim- to confirm whether individual children have learnt sufficient phonic decoding and blending skills to an appropriate standard.
