Psalm 5:11 But let all who take refuge in You be glad, Let them ever sing for joy; And may You shelter them, That those who love Your name may exult in You. Hymns Invitation Red Songbook - Supplemental

Jonah Preached Jonah 3 2Ki 14:23 ¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, became king in Samaria, and reigned forty-one years. 2Ki 14:25 He restored the border of Israel from the entrance of Hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the LORD, the God of Israel, which He spoke through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of Gath-hepher.

City of Nineveh Built by Nimrod (Genesis 10:11-12) Enormous city 120,000 citizens “3 days walk” (either around, through or in) Destroyed by its former vassal Babylon 612 BC

Jonah’s Unique Message
1. To the Gentiles Not even to a nation of familiars 2. Not a message of repentance Simply an announcement of destruction "40 days and Nineveh will be overthrown"

Nineveh’s Response Regal decree – all men must repent Turn from wickedness and violence God’s mercy came through

Nineveh’s Lesson to Us The OTHER sign of Jonah – repentance Luke 11:29-32 The testimony of ancient cities – Matthew 11:21 Sodom and Gomorrah Tyre and Sidon Lu 11:29 ¶ As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, "This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. 30 "For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 "The Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 "The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. Mt 11:21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 "Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 "And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. 24 "Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you."

Nineveh’s Lesson to Us What should it take to repent? Should we have to beg others to change? Should we need to drag people to worship? Should we need to force people to learn? Nineveh judges US for not seeking God This is a measure of maturity – a child repents mainly because they are chastened; a mature one because he/she feels shame

Nineveh’s Lesson to Us What does successful repentance look like? Broken hearted over sin Psalm 51 Luke 18:10-14 Lu 18:10 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 "The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: 'God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 'I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' 13 "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!‘ 14 "I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Nineveh’s Lesson to Us What does successful repentance look like? Broken hearted over sin Taking action to change Acts 26:20 James 1:22-25 Ac 26:20 "but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. Jas 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

Nineveh’s Lesson to Us What does successful repentance look like? Broken hearted over sin Taking action to change Preventing the opportunity of sin Romans 13:14 Ro 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. Story of boy who is told by his father to go out and do his chores and NOT go swimming. When he finds him swimming later

Don’t Just Believe IN God; BELIEVE God
People of Nineveh BELIEVED God He would bring His punishment on them They changed Believe God He rewards those who seek Him He will punish us for disobedience Ro 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. Story of boy who is told by his father to go out and do his chores and NOT go swimming. When he finds him swimming later
