2 Definition: Accreditation is the independent verification of an organisation's competence to provide services such that the users have confidence in the outcomes

3 Accreditation is: A continual process, not an event
A proven tool for building and maintaining a culture of quality A formal third-party assessment against an Accreditation Standard

Pre – Application > Traffic Light Ready (TLR) > Prep workshops Traffic Light Ready Formal Application to UKAS Pre-assessment & contract review Web Based Assessment Initial assessment (web-based assessment) Initial assessment (on-site assessment visit) . Provisional & Final Decision (Grant of Accreditation) Annual maintenance & Re-assessment

6 How long does it take? From formal application to accreditation:
Shortest = 4 months Longest = 40 months Average = 14.7 months

7 Success in accreditation:
Stage 1: The standard is understood

8 Success in accreditation:
Stage 2: The service is well prepared for accreditation

9 Success in accreditation:
Stage 3: The service is well delivered

10 The 8 physiological disciplines:
Audiology Cardio Physiology Gastro-intestinal Physiology Neurophysiology Respiratory Physiology Urodynamics Vascular Sciences Ophthalmic & Vision Sciences

11 The 4 Domains: Clinical: rapid and accurate diagnosis and/or treatment
Patient experience: service that is patient focused Facilities, resources & workforce: competent resources Safety: safety for patients and staff

12 Evidence: Say what you do - document it Do what you say, consistently
Show that what you are doing is effective, accurate, safe, patient-focused, efficient, timely, accessible, sustainable

13 Ways of providing evidence:
Electronically via the web-based assessment tool Face-to-face discussions during the on-site assessment visit Observation/witnessing of activities, behaviours, signage and written material during the on-site assessment visit

14 Preparation, preparation, preparation!
Tips for success: Preparation, preparation, preparation! Ensure senior clinical and managerial leadership with sustainable funding source Identify a skilled Co-ordinator/Project Lead/Quality Manager Set up and empower a project team (skill mix) involving as many as possible Gain wide local support for quality - avoid accreditation as being seen as a ‘top down’ initiative!

15 Tips for success: Undertake regular gap analysis / self-assessments (TLR) Review all current policies, procedures and record keeping arrangements – develop your Quality Management System Provide training to all staff Review local patient/service user involvement Establish a comprehensive quality improvement programme - including a comprehensive internal audit/monitoring plan
