7 Planning for College and Career?

8 How to decide what is the best career for you!
Ask yourself these questions…. What do I like to do for fun? What do I like to read about? Who is the one person that I admire the most? What class inspires me the most? What are my strengths and weaknesses? Where do I want to live? What was the one career that I talked about as a child?

9 Don’t be afraid to think outside of the !
Connect what you are good at and passionate about, to the jobs that are out there, not the other way around! Example: You like the idea of working in the health field with children? Nursing is a great way to do it, but so is respiratory therapy, speech language pathology, physical therapist assistant, and the list goes on and on. Which career is best for you?

13 State Colleges: A.A. or A.S.?
Associate in Arts degrees (A.A.) are meant for transfer, particularly to State Universities, Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees are meant to start work after earning your two year degree in a specific program. Examples: Business, Criminal Justice, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, or Radiology. There are many others too!

14 Career and Technical School?
These specialty schools offer a variety of programs to get the student in the workforce and often starting at $10,000-$20,000 more than a high school graduate with up to a years worth of training in a specific field. Example: Licensed Practical Nurse, EMT, Paramedic, Dental Assistant, Massage Therapy, Pharmacy Technician, Cosmetology, Welding, Electrician, HVAC & Automotive.

15 What about University? AA degree earned at a state college is a university transfer degree begin at the university as a Junior. Typically 4 years of education to earn a Bachelors degree. Or continue 2-4+ years to get a Master’s or PhD degree for higher learning skills needed for many jobs/careers. Example: Guidance Counselor, Physician, or Nurse Practitioner.

Law Enforcement & Corrections Academy, CNA & College Credit Certificates Ex. Business, IT, Criminal Justice, Office Admin, EMT, Paramedic C O L E G State College Standard High School Diploma OR GED Associate in Science (A.S.) Degrees Ex. Business, Nursing, Allied Health, IT, Criminal Justice Associate in Arts (A.A.) Degree Transfer Degree We will first start out with a road map of post-secondary education options. You are currently either a High School graduate or student with a GED. Your next choice for post-secondary education may be training at the Technical College level. This is not college credit coursework, however it is vocational training that prepares you to enter the Workforce and start your career. Examples include Massage Therapy, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Diesel Mechanic. The second option is being accepted directly into an University where you enter as a Freshman and take courses directly towards a Bachelor degree within a specific major and possibly minor. Examples include a Bachelor in Science degree in Business Administration or Biology. Once you complete your Bachelor degree you can then enter into the workforce and start your career OR you can attend Professional School to become a Doctor or Lawyer or further your education and obtain a Master or Doctoral Degree such as a Master of Business Administration or Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Sometimes students decide to only complete 2 years at a University and then complete their Bachelor Degree at the State college, which is always an option now that State Colleges offer Bachelor Degree programs. The third option, and the option that you have chosen today, is attending a state college. At the State college there are many options and paths to take. The first is completing an Associate in Arts, or Transfer Degree. An Associate in Arts degree prepares students to transfer into their chosen Bachelor Degree at the University or State College depending on coursework chosen specific to the major they wish to seek at the transfer institution. The second option is similar to Technical College, in that our College offers Vocational programs in Law Enforcement & Corrections Academies, Certified Nursing Assistant and Phlebotomy. Some of these programs may articulate into to college credits here, so it is recommended to meet with your Advisor to plan this accordingly! Our college offers College Credit Certificates which are a stepping-stone towards Associate in Science Degrees as well. The third option is the Associate in Science Degrees prepare students to enter directly into the Workforce and start their career with specific courses and specialized training with in a specific program of study. Examples are limited access programs that require separate applications such as Respiratory Care, Nursing, and Radiologic Technology and open access programs in Business, Information Technology, Criminal Justice, and Office Administration. These AS Degrees prepare students for the Workforce and once a student has completed a program they can then apply to our Bachelor Degrees offered at the college. Bachelor Degree Ex. BAS, BSN, BS Early Childhood Education Doctoral Studies Ex. Ph.D., Ed.D. Master’s Degree Ex. MBA, MSN, MPH Universities or Private Colleges Undergraduate Bachelor Degrees (Ex. BS, BA) Professional School Ex. Medicine, Law, Pharmacy
