Priests For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness Hebrews 5:1-2 Purpose of priests – to offer gifts to God and to make sacrifices for sins
5
Priests For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer Hebrews 8:3
6
Priests Appointed (divine) To offer both gifts To offer sacrifices Why is this necessary?

After the Fall Intercession became necessary For He is not a man, as I am, that I may answer Him, and that we should go to court together. Nor is there any mediator between us, who may lay his hand on us both. Job 9:32-33

Priesthood of Aaron "In the tabernacle of meeting, outside the veil which is before the Testimony, Aaron and his sons shall tend it from evening until morning before the LORD. It shall be a statute forever to their generations on behalf of the children of Israel Exodus 27:21
10
Priesthood of Aaron And you shall put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be over Aaron's heart when he goes in before the LORD. So Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel over his heart before the LORD continually Exodus 28:30
11
Priesthood of Aaron "And it shall be that the rod of the man whom I choose will blossom; thus I will rid Myself of the complaints of the children of Israel, which they make against you.“ Numbers 17:5

Foreshadows Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. Genesis 14:18 First use of the word “Kohen” (Priest) in the Bible There are just two mentions of Melchizedek in the OT – here and psalms
13
Foreshadows The LORD has sworn and will not relent, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek“ Psalm 110:4 Subsequent silence and debate: What does it mean? What would a Jew have made of this reference? Clearly it seemed significant, as there were many writings about Melchizedek in the intertestiment period Philo identifies Melchizedek with the Logos as priest of God,[33] and honoured as an untutored priesthood. In one PRE-Christ dead sea scroll Melchizedek is seen as a divine being and Hebrew titles such as Elohim are applied to him. According to this text Melchizedek will proclaim the "Day of Atonement" and he will atone for the people who are predestined to him. He also will judge the peoples.

The Order of Melchizedek
So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” As He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek” Hebrews 5:5
15
The Order of Melchizedek
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace“ Hebrews 7:1-2

The Order of Melchizedek
Levi Levi was able to be priest to Israel, but Gentiles excluded Israelites Gentiles
17
The Order of Melchizedek
Abraham Abraham was a blessing to Jews and Gentiles, and therefore by submitting to Melchizedek, He is the Priest of all Israelites Gentiles A priesthood able to intercede for all

The Order of Melchizedek
Impossible Qualifications: An unending life who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. For He testifies: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.“ Hebrews 7:16 A priest could not simply make himself a priest; consider the sins of Jeroboam
19
The Order of Melchizedek
Impossible Qualifications: An unending life An oath from God Himself for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: "The LORD has sworn And will not relent……” Hebrews 7:21

The Order of Melchizedek
We become priests in Christ But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; Peter 2:9 One must be of the lineage of priests to be priest; we are of Christ
21
The Order of Melchizedek
