1 Life in the Colonies

2

3 Daily Life for the Colonists
Secluded- lack of roads and your neighbours could live very far away due to farm land and forests Quiet- the only noise you heard was the sounds of weather and animals Dark- homes lit by candles, oil lamps, and moonlight Almost everyone in debt- took awhile to raise crops for sale so people borrowed to buy supplies Barter economy- trade products not money

4 Depending on Each Other
Neighbours were more than just friends, as they could help you survive HOW? Helped each other build homes, farms, clear land Shared supplies and equipment Formed close communities by building churches and schools Created social activities and groups

5 Class Conflict The colonies were copying the British class system and this angered immigrants who were trying to escape this class system Large estates were being purchased with the idea of renting small tracks to tenant farmers. Had to be upper class to be included in government

6 Occupy Wall Street 2011

7 What Do You Want? One of the main motivators to come to the Canada’s was the desire to own land Renting only benefits the landlord Owning land = political power and self sufficiency FREEDOM!

8 Farming is Not for Me Various jobs for people who chose not to farm for example: Blacksmith Construction Ship builder Hose servant Teacher Textiles

9 The Challenge of Farm/Settler Life
Land was densely forested and could take families 20 years to clear No chainsaws, no heavy duty equipment All work done by hand Farms took years to raise crops for sale as families consumed what was grown Failed crops led to starvation and poverty No roads so even getting to the land seems impossible made worse by crown and clergy reserves

10 Crown and Clergy Reserves
Blocks of land set aside for the government and/or the Anglican Church (Protestant) Could be rented or sold for profits or held for equity Almost 1/3 of land and most not used Never cleared, no roads, in the way Caused land prices to increase significantly due to supply and demand

11 The Land Problem Land speculators bought up good land and sold it off in sections for higher prices Absentee landlords bought good land to rent out, but they did not build roads or guarantee access to water - Paying high rents for unfinished land Only poor lands available for regular immigrants despite advertising promises
