1 Central Washington university web campus
Presentation for the Understanding of online major programs

2 What is online learning
Way for lazy people to get a degree Education for people who like to cheat Discounted education or Access to education due to geographical location Ability to earn a degree from a credible institution while facing barriers such as employment, dependent families situations, or disabilities. Natural progression in education for a lifelong online learner

3 What is online Learning?
“advantages of e-learning technologies include an ability to provide just-in- time learning; increased access; removal of time, place and situational barriers; cost effectiveness; greater accountability; increased interaction; provision of future employment skills for students; and effective support for lifelong learning.” - Anderson, Terry. The Theory and Practice of Online Learning. 2nd ed. Edmonton: AU Press, 2008.

4 “I guess it’s a part of our future, so we have to embrace it”
In fall 2014, there were 5,750,417 students enrolled in any distance education courses at degree-granting postsecondary institutions. NOTE: Degree-granting institutions grant associate's or higher degrees and participate in Title IV federal financial aid programs. SOURCE: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics. (2016). Digest of Education Statistics, 2015 (NCES ), K12 online learners

5 Online Students vs. taking online classes
Online students = accepted into an online major and pursuing an online degree Are enrolled into the WEB campus Students online = students who are on a physical campus who happen to be taking online classes These students often consider themselves to be labeled as online students After open enrollment begins, any student can enroll for online classes

6 How is Online Different?
Flexible class times 2 am vs. 9 to 9:50 am Class room setting vs. Virtual Classrooms Skype questions vs. in person during office hours Not designed to work at own pace Harder to manage if not organized or self disciplined

7 Who are online students?
People with disabilities Has a full time career or working 2+ jobs Family care givers Those living in rural/remote areas K – 12 online students Military Active Duty, Veterans, Spouses, Dependents Civilian contractors working abroad *Images copied from Google images

8 Junior and Senior Level Students
The WEB campus is designed for students with a DTA pursuing a major Those who don’t transfer a DTA are subject to our (new) Gen Ed Requirements Some transfer in with only program certificates Incoming Freshman do happen Logistics Disabilities Age

9 Geographical Rules for online students
Students are mapped using their physical address measuring the length of the commute to the nearest campus (not “as the crow flies”). Students on the Westside must be outside a 20 mile radius of their campus 20.1 miles = WEB campus Students on the Eastside must be 50 miles Challenges for Coulee Dam students to reach Moses Lake for classes Students may not have an Ellensburg address and be on the WEB campus Unless given special permission Disabilities, Employment, other extenuating circumstances Fun Fact: many of Des Moines students pursuing an online major live across the street from the campus. They are full time online students assigned to Des Moines campus, but are designated as Des Moines students taking online classes.

13 How do we compare Nationally?
150 Total Online Programs at Penn State – “World Campus”

14 Online Degree stigmas Worth less than a “regular degree”
Degree is the same – not labeled as “online” School brands matter – Penn State vs. American Public University Waste of time / not as meaningful to teach Often times take more investment and the return is greater due to the student’s position in life Online students are not as smart and are lazy Students are more likely to value their education more Students are more well versed and readily apply what they learn Students online often manage one or more jobs in addition to caring for a family. Their education will open new career opportunities.

15 Thoughts to consider 87% of Ellensburg campus students are taking at least one online class per quarter. My average caseload varies around 380 students. If the students can’t get the degree they want, they will go somewhere else. Currently five Community Colleges offer full online DTAs North Seattle College Central Seattle College Gray’s Harbor College Tacoma Community College (Biology, Pre-Nursing, Health Information Tech, Sonography)
