Silk scarves will be wrapped, folded, clamped, sewn as a resist, then dyed in acid dyes-for a finished “Make it -Take It” Scarf. Please bring: rubber gloves, needle & thread, C-clamps, binder clips, masking tape, clean 3” diameter PVC pipe 2 feet or longer.

SPINNING SHADES OF SHETLAND Date: Friday, April 12, 2019 Time: 9:00 AM-12:00 PM Location: GSM Heritage Center, Main Gallery, Front Alcove Cost: $50.00, includes Materials Fee Maximum No. of Students: 12 Nancy Barnett Nancy has been raising sheep and spinning for 34 years and breeding Angora Rabbits for 30 years. She has won Two Sustainable Ag grants, one for her Angora/Wool Socks. She lives in the Arkansas Ozarks. Spin the Shades of Shetland and Learn about these Adorable Little Sheep. Shetland Sheep come in 11 recognized colors. You will be spinning samples of each which will be enough to knit, spin, weave or crochet a project. We will discuss and provide information about these adorable Little Sheep.. Student should bring: Spinning wheel or Spindle, Niddy Noddy, any spinning tools you use.

This class will cover parts of the wheels, wheel maintenance, how to choose a fleece or roving and learn to spin a good yarn. High School or Adult newbies or novice spinners are welcome. Students should bring their fiber and spinning wheel, if they have one. An assortment of fiber will be available at the class. With two weeks of advance notice, the instructor, can bring a couple of wheels as loaners.

Date: Saturday, April 13, 2019 Time: 12:00 PM-2:00 PM Location: GSM Heritage Center, Main Gallery, Fire Pit Cost: $45.00 Maximum No. of Students: 8 For spinners who can make a yarn that holds together, but want a little more control over the yarn they make. This class will work on techniques and fiber handling skills in order to make the yarn you want, rather than “settling for whatever it makes”. Spinners should bring their wheels and any fibers they particularly want help with. An assortment of fibers will be available at the class (included in the class fee) and there will be a discussion about how each fiber’s characteristics influence the new yarn and what to look for when buying and blending. With two weeks of advance notice, the instructor, can bring a couple of wheels as loaners.

This class will cover top and bottom whorl spindles. Spindle spinning is a very handy, portable way to thoroughly enjoy the tactile wonders of making yarn from a cloud of fiber. This class is suitable for students age 12 and up. Experienced or inexperienced spinners. Spinning fibers and a spindle to take home is included in the class fee.

COME DYE WITH ME Patty Benton Patty has been a handspinner for over 10 years. She has produced art batts, rolags and dyed roving for sale at the Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival for the past 6 years. Patty has taught several classes on dying wool and working with a Blending Board. Come and create your very own hand dyed yarn for a pair of socks, a shawl or other project. Sock blanks are flat knitted, dyed, then the blank is unknitted as you knit. It is full of surprises. Come dye a sock blank with acid dyes and process it in the microwave for a quick, beautiful one of a kind creation. These sock blanks are a blend of merino and nylon fingering weight yarn. Each blank is 100 grams, approx. 460 yds., that’s enough for a pair of crew socks or a triangle shawl. Students should bring an apron and rubber gloves. Additional undyed sock blanks will be for sale.

First Time Offered NEEDLE FELTED MONKEY Karen Bills Date: Friday, April 12, 2019 Time: 1:00 PM-4:30 PM Location: Townsend Visitor Center-Exhibit Room Cost: $56.00, includes Material Fee Maximum No. of Students: 10 Karen is a juried member in the Foothills and Southern Highlands Craft Guilds. Karen has taught at the Appalachian Arts Center and the Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival. Needle felting is tangling fibers using a barbed needle. In this class each student will learn basic needle-felting techniques and leave the class with a finished MONKEY! No experience necessary. We’ll create a monkey from sheep’s wool. A wire armature will allow the monkey to bend in different positions. The class will start by bending wire, next the wire will be wrapped with wool. Finally details of face and tail will be added. Suitable for students 12 years old and up. All materials will be supplied, you supply the imagination!

“HOT PAD” Karen Bills Karen is a juried member in the Foothills and Southern Highlands Craft Guilds. Karen has taught at the Appalachian Arts Center and the Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival. Date: Saturday, April 13, 2019 Time: 1:00 PM-4:30 PM Location: Townsend Visitor Center-Exhibit Room Cost: $56.00, includes Material Fee Maximum No. of Students:10 Needle felting is tangling fibers using a barbed needle. Wet felting uses warm water and agitation to tangle wool tighter. Students will learn needle felting and wet felting techniques and leave class with a completed project. No experience necessary. The student will begin with one ounce of wool and needle a 7x7 pad, next a design is needled on the pad, and finally the pad is completed by wet felting. Sheep’s wool is remarkable in that it is a renewable resource, it is durable, flame resistant, insulates and retains shape. Class is suitable for students 12 years old and up. All materials will be supplied, you supply the imagination!

BIAS WEAVE ON A TRIANGLE LOOM Date: Friday, April 12 , 2019 Time: 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM Location: GSM Heritage Center Second Floor, Room 3 Cost: $30.00, includes Materials Fee Maximum No. of Students: 12 Come learn the techniques for Bias weaving from the start to the finish. You will weave on an eight inch Triangle loom making 1 Mug rug or 2 Doll Shawls. The techniques you will learn may be applied to any size Triangle loom. The first hour and a half will be devoted to instruction and weaving on your Bias weave triangle, in the second hour you will weave on your own, completing the second bias weave triangle. The last half hour will be finishing this project in 2 Doll Shawls or one Mug Rug

INTRODUCTION TO WEAVING ON AN INKLE LOOM Date: Friday, April 12, 2019 Time: 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM Location: GSM Heritage Center, Main Gallery-Glass Window Room Cost: $71, includes Materials Fee Maximum No. of Students: 10 Roiana Buckmaster Roiana, Mt. Pleasant, TN, works with her husband and son to build a flock of Icelandic sheep. She was knitting at 6; embroidering at 10, and then spinning, weaving, tatting, and other fiber arts. It’s a slippery slope, but what a ride! This class is your chance to find out if weaving is for you. We will use a Mini Inkle Loom to explore weaving with a simple heddle system to create a basic warp-faced fabric that will introduce you to the principles used in weaving on multiple harness looms. You will learn to warp your loom, tie heddles, create 2 sheds to pass the shuttle through, how to keep the edges tidy, how to fix a broken warp thread, and more. All materials plus a handmade Poplar wood loom and shuttle are provided. Additional materials for more bands are available for purchase after class and you may upgrade to a Maple wood loom for an additional $15.

She has been active in fiber arts since She first learned to weave, then spin. She is an avid crocheter who loves to share her knowledge. She and her husband have a small farm where they raise alpacas, sheep, and Boer goats. Mother Nature is gracious enough to lay a color palette right outside our windows. We will explore some of what she has to offer, giving you the courage to go out and sample more. Students will go home with samples we dye in class plus other samples dyed previously. All materials furnished. Students should bring a pen and paper to take notes.

Now that you have learned basic crochet it’s time to further your knowledge with a few stitches and techniques that are very helpful. In this class we will work on Foundation Stitches, Magic Circle, Crochet in the Round and will start a hat. You will leave with a started project and enough information to finish with ease. We will also be working from a written pattern so if you are having any difficulty I will help you understand. Must know Basic Crochet Stitches. Students must bring Crochet hook size “H” and scissors.

Jonee Davis INTERMEDIATE PEG LOOM WEAVING Jonee is from Wheaton, Missouri. She has been active in fiber arts since She first learned to weave, then spin. She is an avid crocheter while dabbling in all aspects relating to fibers. She feels we are never too young or too old to learn new things about the world of fiber arts and loves to share her knowledge with others. No. of Students: 12 If you have ever woven on a Peg Loom this is the class for you! The history of Peg Loom weaving is unclear, it is believed to be an old method of weaving cloth. We are going to take it one step further and learn to weave a circle then make a basket using a Peg Loom. This class is for those who have previously woven on a Peg Loom. All supplies furnished except scissors.

She teaches children and adults and exhibits her work internationally. As a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild she strives to maintain the skill levels of our ancestors’ crafts and to use them in unique ways. Come with a color scheme in mind and we’ll make a nuno felted custom designed pillow for your couch or favorite person. This wet felting class takes advantage of the huge range of available colors of merino wool, not to mention all the silks and embellishment materials to decorate the surface. We’ll look at many options to complete your pillow at home once the wool is dry. Try a little prefelt for an eye-catching edge on this lightweight scarf. Prefelts have a few unusual properties when used in the nuno felting process. Cut designs hold their shape, leave a beautiful halo on the reverse side, and adhere to the silk perfectly every time. You’ll learn a few new tricks and go home with an unusual all occasion scarf. She teaches both children and adults and exhibits her work internationally. As a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild she strives to maintain the skill levels of our ancestors’ crafts and enjoys using them in unique new ways. Just for the fun of it, we’ll encase a string of battery-powered fairy lights into a felted cord for an eye catching bag handle, necklace, or wrap bracelet. We’ll fast felt a dozen small flowers to be stitched onto the cord once everything dries out. You won’t need to know electronics for this project but we will take a look at what’s available in the emerging wearable tech craft. Students bring: Small bubble, bubble wrap 12” x 2 yards, towel, scissors, plastic bag to carry your creations home in. Instructor will provide all other materials

SPINDLES OF THE WORLD Robin Goatey Date: Friday, April 12, 2019 Time: 10:00 AM-12:00 PM Location: GSM Heritage Center Main Gallery-Glass Window Room Cost: $46.00, includes one spindle of choice Maximum No. of Students: 10 Robin Goatey is an award winning full time festival craftsman working Fiber Festivals in the Midwest. Inspired by Tolkien’s Legendarium, he started carving Ents, Wizards and Castles after reading the Hobbit. He makes tools for Folkways Artisans and provides “northern Folk-school” instruction. Learn 3 different Support Spindles of the World and keep the one you like the best to take home. We will practice the Navajo inspired Southwest Spindle, The Tibetan Spindle and the Compromise Russian Spindle. All of the Spindles have a non-traditional hook on the end with a consequent result: They are easy to learn and utilize. Additional spindles and bowls will be available for purchase in The Dancing Goatey’s booth. All materials, supplies and use of tools are included.

INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRY Date: Saturday, April 13, 2019 Time: 9:00 AM-12:00 PM Location: GSM Heritage Center Second Floor, Room 2 Cost: $66.00, includes Materials Fee Maximum No. of Students: 10 Robin Goatey Robin Goatey is an award winning full time festival craftsman working Fiber Festivals in the Midwest. Inspired by Tolkien’s Legendarium, he started carving Ents, Wizards and Castles after reading the Hobbit. He makes tools for Folkways Artisans and provides “northern Folk-school” instruction. Learn Weft-faced weaving on the Tayet Removable Peg Tapestry loom. True tapestry has a weft facing while the warp disappears into the structure and packing of weave. We will warp the travel loom in class and practice the techniques of weft-facing, adding joins and adding colors. The class includes a travel loom, warp thread, beater fork and tapestry needle. Students must bring: a variety of yarn in various weights and colors to the class. Dyed long-wool locks do nicely in these little tapestries and will be available for purchase.

First Time Offered Robin Goatey CELTIC KNOTWORK PLAITS: PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTION Robin Goatey is an award winning full time festival craftsman working Fiber Festivals in the Midwest. Inspired by Tolkien’s Legendarium, he started carving Ents, Wizards and Castles after reading the Hobbit. He makes tools for Folkways Artisans and provides “northern Folk-school” instruction. Date: Sunday, April 14, 2019 Time: 10:00 AM-1:00 PM Location: GSM Heritage Center Second Floor, Room 3 Cost: $36.00 Maximum No. of Students: 10 Celtic’s art most ancient form, Pictish Knotwork, is strictly line and plait. We will use simple mathematical constructs to design “one line” all over patterns that can be adapted to fill and space or shape. Class handout included. Students should bring: colored drawing pencils, eraser, drawing pad, Sharpie marker (fine, but not ultra fine) and a drawing.

SLIPPERS FOR ME Patti Hodge Patti began learning about the fiber arts in She started with spinning, weaving and needle felting. Wet felting is her first love. After taking many felting classes, she has developed her own style influenced by international felters who tend to have and use a variety of different elements and tools. Starting by making a mold of your feet, wet felting over a resist and adding reinforcement. We will shape and size over our molds. Finishing with adding leather patches to the sole to add traction. We will be learning several processes in this one project: how to make a mold, felting over a resist, reinforcing an area of wear, and fulling and shaping the felt. I’ve been making Dorset Buttons for myself for years and have taught this class before. In fact, I’m offering it again due to the requests of several people. I am also a member of the Foothills Craft Guild, as well as a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America, Knoxville Chapter. Ready to create a one-of-a- kind embellishment for your hand-crafted knitted, woven or crocheted piece? How about a lovely brooch or embellishment from threads and know-how? This is the class to inspire you! Create a unique accessory based on a historical craft that were the first mass produced threadwork buttons. You will make a decorative button in class that can be used as a brooch or an embellishment. Depending on time, you will also start a second button. This is great for using extra bits of yarn or thread to make a matching button for a knitted or crocheted project. It is also adaptable for a variety of jewelry or decorative pieces. No experience needed. A pair of your own small scissors would be handy. Also any yarn you especially want to use.

She has published several patterns, and recently re-branded and reopened her blog under the name ‘Vintage Kitten Creations’, where she writes about knitting, food, and vintage designs. She has taught classes at SMFAF in the past. She is accomplished in a variety of different media, including painting, basket weaving, pottery and felting. Her interest in fiber arts began in 1992 when her daughter was involved with the 4-H sheep project. Since then she has become an expert needle felter and taught numerous classes. Not sure where we will be yet Come explore the magic of needle felting and create your own needle felted, string jointed bear. Participants will begin with wool roving to sculpt their own bear and will be able to complete most of their bear in class and will have the knowledge to finish their bear at home. Participants will learn the basics of felting and the process to create a string joint. Students bring: scissors, needle and strong thread. All other materials provided by the instructor. She has taught a Crock Pot dyeing class in past years at the Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival. Last year she introduced Microwave dying, this year she introduces a Food Safe technique for dyeing wool at home. Note: Food coloring does not contaminate your microwave or cooking utensils. This method works equally well on yarn.

She teaches hand-sewing and block printing techniques to preserve the techniques from Sweden. Her signature work is sheepskin coverlets with traditional printed and painted patterns. In this class students will learn basic skills to complete a handcraft project in sheepskin. Topics include: History, Selection of sheepskins, Equipment, Basic techniques for hand-sewing in sheepskin, Participants will make their first own project, such as a pair of mittens, baby slippers, a teddy bear or a small pillow using their new skills. We will start with 24 skeins of yarn that have been pre-mordanted. Students will dye, post mordant and ammonia dip the yarn. We will get 24 colors from one dye pot. This will require attention to detail. Students will go home with 24 colors of yarn, charted with how the color was acquired. Students may bring an item of their own to throw into the dye pot after our dyeing is complete. Please wear old clothes or apron, closed toe shoes and bring rubber gloves. Pen and paper for notes. All yarns are provided and have already been mordanted by the instructor.

First Time Offered FELTED GREETING CARD Judy Wilson Date: Saturday, April 13, 2019 Time: 9:30 AM-12:30 PM Location: Townsend Visitor Center-Exhibit Room Cost: $36.00, includes Materials Fee Maximum No. of Students: 15 After retiring from the show ring with her sheep, Judy began needle and wet felting in She teaches from her studio and at fiber festivals in North Carolina and Virginia. Judy is active in the Twin City Artisans Association and the Yadkin Arts Council. Using a special barbed needle, you will learn how to make a colorful, wool picture on a wet felted base: similar to painting with wool. Your ‘painting’ will be mounted on greeting card stock for a favorite friend or loved one or it can be framed. You will be provided a finished, wet-felted base and will learn to needle-felt a design on to the base. You will also learn how to wet-felt the base which you can take home to finish for a second card. You will learn basic needle and wet felting techniques and create a lovely gift. All materials are provided by the instructor.
