Industry Overview BME Lecture 1

ES1103 Basic Mechanical Engineering Teaching Scheme: Lectures: 3Hrs/Week Examination Scheme: In-Semester: 25 Marks End-Semester: 50 Marks Credits: 3

ES1103 Basic Mechanical Engineering Course Objectives: 1. To provide an overview of mechanical engineering systems (Power plant, Manufacturing plant, Maintenance systems, transmission systems). 2. To enable students to understand terminology used in Mechanical engineering with its significance. 3. To make student understand concept of Mechatronics System.

ES1103 Basic Mechanical Engineering Course Outcomes: 1. The student will be able to differentiate between major areas like Design, Manufacturing and Thermal in mechanical industries while addressing a problem. 2. The student will be aware of avenues available while choosing career opportunities in mechanical engineering Industry. 3. Understand the underlying principle of energy conversion systems and power plants, power producing and Power absorbing devices.

Industry A group of establishments that produce similar products or provide similar services Copyright Can Stock photo Automotive Food Processing Pharmaceutical Textile

Classification of Industry e.g. oil, mining e.g. Automobilee.g. Training, Calibration These industries extract Natural material from natural resources

Industry Primary Secondary/Manufacturing Product Process Tertiary/Service Classification of Industry

Product Industry  Work on Product to improve quality  Every product needs Process

Product Industry  Automobile  Electronic Appliances  Gear Manufacturing  Auto components  Boilers  Airplanes

Process Industry  Work on Process to improve product quality  Every process gives Product Tomato sauce manufacturing plant

Process Industry Dairy plant

Process Industry Oil Refinery plant

Process Industry Food and Beverage Paints and coatings Specialty chemicals Bulk-drug pharmaceuticals Cosmeceuticals Textiles Sugar Oil and Gas

Service Industry

Healthcare Professional services Hospitality Travel Hotels Public Utility: Electric Power Natural Gas Telecommunication Waste Management Water Supply Risk management: Insurance Security Financial services : Accountancy Banks and building societies Stock brokerages Tax preparation Valuation

BME Sample business process: Need/ Opportunity Market Study Sale Production Business Plan Product development After sales Service During Product planning the manufacturer has to decide whether the activity is to be treated as project or a product from a production line or from a process plant.

Product Life Cycle

Difference Product, Process & Service Industry Sr. No CriteriaProduct industryProcess industryService industry 1Plant layoutMachinery and equipment is arranged according to the requirements of the goods being made Machinery and equipment is arranged according to the activities being performed irrespective of the product No specific plant layout required 2InventoryRequired not required 3ProductionDiscrete, sequential Continuous consequntialAs per customer requirements 4Physical production site Required May not be required 5Basis of activityProduct manufacturing uses Bill of materials Process manufacturing uses formulations or recipes Provide support to enhance business

Sr. No CriteriaProduct industryProcess industryService industry 6ActivityMaking and assembly of discrete components Blending in batch or continuous blending Use of expertise, expert knowledge, services may involve specialized equipment 7Post manufacture condition of goods Products can be disassembled, dismantled and repaired The finished good cannot be repaired. Ingredients from goods cannot be removed, corrected and reintroduced 8Disturbance in continuity of manufacturing The production can be achieved in shifts The process industry is required to be run without interruptions once operational. 9Control on quality after-the-fact statistical analysis can be used to get continuous improvement. Real time controlOn the basis of feedback and suggestions from the customer 10Typical examples of goods manufactured Grinder, Washing machine, automobile, Newspaper, Colors and dyes, Power, Chemicals, Sugar, Petroleum products Calibration services, training services, consultancy, Hiring services, Branding.
